Prado in the hand option on a Pajero

Have a 2003 turbo diesel Prado with 165,000kms on the clock, have the option to buy a 2010 Pajero diesel with 80,000kms at a good price. Toyota has a good reputation and is everywhere in the bush and mines (they must know something) also the 180 litre tank is a great bonus BUT the Pajero is much newer ? We tow a 16ft caravan.

Put the van behind the pajero and take for a run then you will regret you never got the 3.2D before for towing instead of the prado, Prado's are a great 4wd, good size, great fuel capacity as you mentioned. Now with the pajero a extra large tank can be fitted, wont be as big as the prados factory tanks but have you ever been anywhere that you needed the full 180 L ?? Im a prado owner and love myn BUT if i was after a comfortable tow vehicle with great economy, heaps of grunt I wouldnt hesitate as getting the pajero. My only reason for choosing the prado over the pajero was the solid rear end on the prado where as the pajero is independent all round and doesnt have the wheel travel for off road I like to do, in saying that the traction control well and truely makes up for it. If its a genuine vehicle and you like it then go for it, check the prices on the diesel pajeros, they hold their value as well as a diesel prado...............

Agree. Pajero has got some grunt. If the price is right and it has good service history you cant go wrong.

Cheers

Apart from the great motor, the paj is a more stable towing platform. Also yours is getting to the age where they do the head.
cheers pete

If it's a 2010 Pajero it should be an NT which had the more powerful 3.2 motor and they fixed the issues with the DPF that the NS had. You will find it miles ahead of the old 1Kz Prado diesel (pre D4D) in performance, caravan pulling power and fuel economy, and you will get a ton of standard fitment items that the Prado would have missed out on. What you might not like is that the Pajero will ride a lot firmer than the Prado and probably be noisier. An aux tank will cost about $1500 (less if you want to fit one yourself) and it will take capacity to either 150L or 170L depending on the model you fit.

Pat, for the non technical. What is a DPF and what was wrong with it? I see this type of Pajaro as a logical replacement for my Jackaroo so I am interested to learn.
Thanks,
Kevin

Presumably a Diesel Particulate Filter which heats up every so often and burns off the undesirables..

Yes - Diesel Particulate Filter. Earlier common rail diesel auto Pajeros had the first of these and the calibration of the burn-off cycle as programmed into the ECU proved to be problematic for the Au delivered vehicles. This was resolved with an ECU re-flash by dealers that in 98% of cases seemed to resolve issues with the check engine light coming on and the engine going into limp mode.

The early auto diesel NT pajero used a different DPF with no sensors and does not appear to have a problem. Later NT's have done away with the DPF. Manuals never got them.

G'day lubo

One more for the Pajero camp - I picked up a 2004 NP in 2007 at 72,000 km at the time and have clocked another 100,000 k since - almost half of that towing (mostly long haul trips) - can't fault the towing capabilities, storage room, comfort, power or fuel economy.

One other benefit is the ease of lifting out the 3rd seat to create extra room for storage (just push a lever and it releases - no bolts & nuts to undo) - or space for the extra fuel tank if you really need it.

As stated above - the Paj may be a tad noiser ? - I'm half deaf and don't notice, but if it is a problem - turn the radio up.... ;O)

Good luck with your decision & happy travelling.
