Will be towing a van from Victoria to Karratha early in 2012. What is the best way to head from Kalgoorlie? Appreciate any advice.

How much time have you got?
How long will you be in Karratha for?
Have you got air con in the van?

Hi Bridgee

Do you want to stick to the highways? If so, leave Kalgoorlie north on the Goldfields Highway to Wiluna then west to Meekatharra, turning north on the Great Northern Highway which reaches the North Coast Highway not far south of Port Hedland, then go west to Karratha. A bitumen alternative is to turn west through Karajini to the north of Newman, and follow the scenic route through Tom Price ans Paraburdoo to the North Coastal Highway near Nanutarra, before heading north to Karratha; you will be crossing through the highest area of WA.

Motherhen,
Is the Wiluna-Meekatharra Rd now sealed? I was not aware it was, mind you the last time I was there was back in 1988. If it is not, an alternative would be to turn west at Agnew instead of Wiluna and then north at Mt Magnet if one likes to stick to the tar.

2 years ago when driving from Hedland, i rang the council at Meeka and was advised it was dirt and not in real good condition. The only bitumen route im aware of is the turnoff at Mt Magnet thru Sandstone ( which is a lovely little town) and on to Leinster, Leonora then Kal. A real nice drive!

I drove Wiluna to Meekatharra in July this year. The unsealed road I was on was fairly corrugated in parts with sealed sections at various places. Plus a few potholes- the usual. I towed a trailer with my Troopie with no drama. There must be a few different roads. I followed my garmin and it took me on the dirt road...
There are a few different roads heading to Meeka

1. shortest way is to take the Menzies-sandstone road them the Sandstone Meeka road (all dirt)

2. Kal to Meeka is shorter but rather than go via Wiluna you can go via Leinster, Sandstone and Mt Magnet. That road is now bitumised.

3. The quickest way is to go on the Neds Creek Road. You go into Wiluna, past the pub and keep going north. Stay on this road and you end up on the Great Northern Highway about 80km south of Kumarina Roadhouse.

Google it for more info- above 3 options are excerpts from other posts (not mine)

After Xmas rains, the Wiluna - Meeka road can often be a bit rough on caravans, and a heavy pour will result in the road being closed.

If you want an easy drive, take the Menzies- Sandstone route, this is bitumen all the way.

Enjoy Karratha in January, it will be nice and warm.

I agree with heading north out of Kalgoorlie but would turn left (west) at Leinster (cheaper fuel) and go through Sandstone to Mt. Magnet then turn righ (north) and continue. The road is sealed (bitumen) all the way.

My initial reply was made on the basis that i used a trip planner that generally only gives bitumen roads, and i thought a previous post on the Wiluna - Meeka road said it was now sealed. It seems this is not so.

Bridgee, as the others have said, the road to Mt Magnet from near Leinster and via Sandstone is sealed and very good. I thoroughly recommend the Shire run caravan park in the beautiful tiny town of Sandstone. It got my highest score of all the caravan parks we have visited, although on dirt not grass due to the area. As bush campers, we called in and decided to stop for one night - ended up staying there for three nights!Sandstone Caravan Park
