Hi,
I'm due to pick up my Jayco Expanda 17-56.1 Outback in December. I'm looking at a weight distribution hitch, does anyone have suggestions of what type of WDH i should be looking at and what sort of cost for supply and fit. I have a tow ball weight of 250 kg on the back of my pajero

Hi Kegs,

A mate of mine has the same van/towcar as you do . He towed the van without the WDH a couple of times and then put on a Hayman Reese 600LB WDH. The difference, according to him, was very noticable. Made what was already a good set up, brilliant. Can't help with cost but ebay is your friend.

Hi Kegs,
I agree with Landed Eagle. We have the same rig and will be use the same WDH but we have also added an anti sway bar for when travelling on the ouback highways and passing road trains.

I think ours was around about $600 when we bought our Coromal off-roader in 2008.

Check the prices on the internet and when you know what they are do what we did and as you pick up the van hit the dealer for a set, ours knocked quite a bit off of the price. You do need to know what they cost first though.

cheers

kegs, Before you outlay the money check to see if you need one. We recently purchased a 17.55.3 Poptop to tow behing a Mazda BT50. I brought a hayman Reese WDH for the rig however when I got to Mildura to pick up the van I was advised, due to the stiffness of the springs and lack of bounce etc, that I didn't need the WDH. Putting the WDH on would have made the whole unit too stiff and cause a rough ride.
We now tow with a Landcruiser 100 Series TD without WDH and still have no problems. The van tows easily without sway or bounce.
Cheers - give it some thought and maybe check with the dealer.

Kegs,

That 250 kg ball weight will increase whenever the van pitches, removing weight from your tug's front wheels. Loss of weight means loss of some degree of steering and brake efficiency. At the wrong moment, that can lead to trouble. It has nothing to do with your spring stiffness. WDH is a good investment in safety and stability.

Drop into a caravan park and ask around. Or talk to Hayman Reese. Or do a little research on the caravan forums.
