Hello all. I have a trip planned for february, travelling from
Perth to Uluru,
Alice Springs, via
Great central Road. I will be travelling by motorbike. Im looking for an ultra small portable table of somekind, maybe no biggeer than 300 x 300, fold up legs, not totally sure what exactly. From previous experience traveling on motorbike through sand and dust, its not that nice to be cooking and eating on the ground all the time. Anyone know of something that maybe suitable?

I just did a Google on "roll up table" and found some. Diamantina Folding Tables is one.

The concept of that diamantina table is good, its just too big to carry on the bike from what I can see.

We have a folding aluminium table, like the one from Anaconda. I think we got ours from Kmart though. It is lightweight & folds up into a bag which is slightly smaller than a
camping chair.

Gerday Grunta,
I've done a lot of motorbike touring over the years & have never bothered with a table or chairs, but as I get older I can see the need as it's getting to hard sitting on the ground all of the time!
I picked up a couple of small folding tables from BCF a couple of years ago they fold up like a
camp chair & I reckon that they would be perfect for what you want, they are approx' 400x400mm & stand around 400mm high, one of these teamed up with a folding stool would be adequate to take on a motorcycle for an extended trip, the stool is also the perfect height for working on the bike when necessary!

Hey ozrover. Im not really needing the table and chairs for comfort as such, if i wanted comfort I would take the 4wd away on the trip to Alice and beyond. Its just that on previous bike trips,
camping on the side of the road or in the bush, sand and red dust tended to gravitate towards my food and utensils. Not a huge deal, but if i can get an ultra lightweight compact table I will go with it. As for the chair, will prob go with this

Yep!
The tri-stool is exactly what I'm talking about, I've got a couple that I throw into the car for emergency seating & they are great for working on the bike, the side tables that I have are the same but with four legs & a couple of stubbie holders sewn in.
What type of bike are you riding?

Hey grunta
I had the same problem for a similar trip. I didn't end up taking anything. I was thinking about taking a chopping board about the size you are talking about. I was going to chop it in half, put some hinges on it so it would fold out to full size, and use some dowel or longish bolts for detachable legs. Might also be useful if you needed to jack the bike and soft sand too.
For a chair I took a one of those normal fold out
camping chairs but one with shorter legs. Got it from getaway outdoors. It folded up to about 2/3rds as long as a normal chair. It was really nice to be able relax in a comfortable chair after a long day riding the gravel/soft rd.
cheers

Hi Grunta
As you are obviously carrying some gear with you, do you not have a set of decent flat top "box" style panniers ?
I have seen lots of long distance bikers use the pannier lid as a small table, they detatch the whole pannier and it is then a small free standing table of sorts.
One guy camped near us in the Kimberly and he had driven his Beemer R1200GS all the way from Germany doing exactly that. He had a small tripod type chair and sat doing his tea quite happily using both panniers as a prep and serv area.
Just a thought as it would then be one thing less to carry.
This guy even had a telescopic fishing rod and some lures with him !

Hey hazo. No, no hard panniers for me. I dont trust the hard panniers, especially when riding in sand. Its not if, but when I will fall off in the sand. Im not totally sure how much of the roads through the centre are sand, but a fully loaded dual sport tourer isnt an easy beast to handle in the sand. From what i know, hard panniers dont always cope with being dropped too often. Im starting to sound like I have no idea how to ride a bike lol.
On my last trip up to the
kimberley on the bike I took a telescopic rod also,
snorkel , mask and fins to boot. I took too much on that trip, weight is a bit more of an issue on the bike than In the car as you would know. Im trying to be a little smarter about things on this trip
