hi all
seen a few enquiries on here. noticed in local paper they are hoping to be back in service with a new vessel early in 2012.
the new vessel would take 85 cars and 300 passengers & takes 325k off a road trip from adelaide to pt.lincoln.

Is it more expensive for the distance than the Kangaroo Island Ferry?

Hi Kevin

The biggest thing to remember is that the KI Ferry is a private run, non Government funded ferry and for that reason it is a dearer trip. Having said that it is well worth the cost and in fact we are over here at the moment. We have been here a week, with another week to go.

The Island is a wash with colour at the moment and is a sight to be seen. I will be doing more Blogs when I get back home, and one for the Wildflowers, with over 100 species captured to date and we have not even headed past Seal Bay yet.

Cheers

We visited there a few years ago and really liked the place for a whole lot of reasons. Good on private enterprise for supplying the service but I would have thought that there would be a government subsidy. Obviously not. Perhaps when all that money starts to flow from Olympic Dam that will all change. I'm joking of course!
Look forward to your blogs. Always good flower pics.
Cheers,
Kevin

Hi Kevin

The secret with Sealink is to book direct with them and book at least one night's accommodation with them and they will give you a big discount. These are the prices at the moment straight from their web site:-

Return Adult fare $92 per person

Return Vehicle charge for up to 5 metres $180

Powered site per night at Penneshaw Caravan Park $33 per night.

We booked direct with Sealink and the first 2 nights with power at the Penneshaw Caravan Park for a discounted price all up for Fiona and I of $308, a savings of $122 which is nothing to be sneezed at.

I was talking to one of the locals about the cost and mentioned that competition is always good for cheaper prices. They then went on to say that when the Sealink Company signed the contracts years ago, they had a very good watertight contract put in place regarding of the times that they can run, the sole rights for building and using their terminals etc and it would be just about very cost prohibitive for another carrier to even think of starting up in competition.

As for the Wildflowers, when we do stop, there seems to be something new every time and like I said above, I have well over 100 different flowers and it is rising daily.

Cheers

That's good information Stephen. Thanks. We will go back at some point. We have friends at Port Elliot and I determined to visit Victor Harbour on at least one ocasion when it in not raining and blowing a freezing gail. From there to Southern Vales, then Kangaroo Island. And just love Langhorne Creek wineries.

nothing is as expensive than that one; even bananas!

I'd be surprised if it's running in 5+ years (just my opinion). Most people are driven by $ rather than time saved these days. Add a few hours on your day and keep your wallet fat.

Just had a direct reply from the company who runs the ferry. No ferry until at least January and that coulr be a "bit iffy" as well. The construction has been held up overseas and they really know not when it will happen.

Every time this company builds a ferry then gets it up and running they sell it. Don't hold your breath waiting. Brian
