Spent some months looking for a new van. Two things off list were Jayco and pop tops.
Now find Jayco Poptop 16.52-3 very suitable and desireable for us ageing couple.
At 1485kg Tare I feel it would be ideal for my Nissan X Trail Turbo Diesel
with a towing rate of 2000kg
What do you think????

John,
I don't know much about the Xtrail so I won't comment other than to say that you will need to add at least 200kg to that weight when you factor in the stuff you'll be packing into the caravan if you are a conservative packer, more if you are not. How much the vehicle can tow also depends on how much weight will be carried inside the vehicle. The more you carry in the Xtrail, the less you'll be able to tow, so be aware of those considerations too.

I don't see anything wrong with Jayco. Have a look in any caravan park or on any highway and they will be in the majority, by a long way, so no matter what some may say, I just think they are fine. 50% of the market can't all be wrong can they? And they have a good warranty Australia wide.

I don't own one by the way, but would seriously consider one next time around.

The Nissan XTrail in Turvbo Diesel is a six speed manual ( not avialable in Auto)
with heaps of power.
I currently tow a Coromal pop top 17 feet.about 1200kg TARE.

I had a bad run with my first van Jayco Discovery pop top 2002 model.

nothing wrong with Jayco. Jayco have 53% of the market. Warranty if needed and parts are always available everywhere.

We towed a Jayco PopTop to MtIsa couple years ago, tho iit was only 14ft, but our X Trail was a T30, then this year went up there again in a mates X Trail Turbo Diesel towing a Coromal Pop Top and I think its a 16ft too. Both trips had no problems towing with the Exy. There were 3 of us and had the usual "too many clothes, pots and pans etc", so probably could have left a few kg home, but the T31 just sailed along, never missing a beat.

we said we'd never have a Jayco but guess what? and we are very happy with it - secondhand and now 7 yrs old and very good value for money - if layout and price suit and has no water stains then go for it

My first van was second hand deceased estate A Jayco Discovery Pop Top
1 The range hood fell out ( no screws in it)
2 The cupboard between single beds fell to bits ( unloaded)
3 The overhead cupboards above beds fell down ( plastic brackets broke)
4 Side kitchen sink drains to annexe area ??????
5 Sink had 90degree bend on pipe water slow draining.
6 Gold plastic across tail lights cracked open about 150mm long and 10mm wide
7 Gold paint on front faded to white
8 Thousands of fine cracks all over bends in outside cladding.
All this happened in less than 2 years.

Forget the TARE weight as it's irrelevant.
The figure to consider is the vans 'ATM' which is the maximum legal loaded weight incluuing water gas, personals etc.
With a TARE of 1485 the ATM will be at least 1785 or possibly higher.
Therefore you should be looking at a loaded van ball weight of around 180Kg depending on the van layout.

Note: Nissan forbids using a WDH with the X-trail and Hayman Reese also prohibit thier WDH's being used on an X-trail as the chassis cannot handle the forces impossed.
Cheers Ozjohn.
