Hi all,

As you may recall (from newsletter 49) we have started working on dynamic mapping and the ability to output maps from the ExplorOz website in real time.

I have just written a function that allows you to take your OziExplorer Plot files (.plt) and convert them into a real map. It is simple and has been tested on .plt files with up to 15000 points (very big). The system will accept your .plt file and then produce a map with other roads, streams, rivers, station names, town names, etc overlaid with your plot file.

In the next few days I will be setting up the ablity to take your map (or other stored maps) and outputing them in real size formats directly to OziExplorer with supporting .map files. This will mean that not only can you swap and share plot files but you will be able to download other peoples plot to map files and load them directly into your computer and navigate on the exact path as recorded using the iMapPlot maps.

If you don't use OziExplorer you can still have a look at some samples available on the PointPlace home page. Also we will be adding support for other user based mapping software packages in the near future.

Go to Point Placenow and select Plot to Map.

This is an exciting development and has huge potential. For now you are all welcome to have a go and produce a map with full zoom and pan controls + the ability to print the image (300x300 pixels only at the moment).

I welcome feedback and thoughts on this development and the entire project at any stage. Please use email direct to me at david@exploroz.com.Regards

Oh yeah and make sure you use the zoom controls to zoom in and out the details change when you zoom in you should be able to zoom to about 5KM across the image in any part of Australia. You can also move around the country using the Australian image in the top right, you can click anywhere on the map to centre your view to where you click.

Have fun!Regards

It says it only takes WPT files and I cannot get it to take a PLT file
Darling something is amiss
Looks like it will be awesome ducky

Are you running the right thingy:

You should click on "Trial Plot to Map - Now!"

NOT EITHER OF THESES TWO - These are in development and are for .wpt file.

Load your file using cut & Paste here - Now!
Load your file using file transfer here - Now! Regards

Ducky great potential
Difficult to impossible to get it to zoom out marginally
Just goes from to much zoom back to original
First PLT file I tried twice it failed completely
Map screen could be substantially bigger
It does not even take up a 1/4 of my screen
Up and down arrows for the zoom would possibly be better for us natural blonds dear as you can imagine we are not the best with technical things
Thanks love for the chance to try it
Will come back another day and see how you are going
You are a clever little lovey cuddly duckie eh

Excellent Stuff David,

I have just tried it, let us know when we can start uploading/downloading and sharing plots and waypoints, I have heaps!!

You can load them now using the trail function - I have yet to build the display interface to allow for download and the production of .map and image files for OziExplorer. I am also working on the mapping software and adding the vegitation and land cover raster images to make the maps fully featured (ie: like a bought one). I will need to work out a structure to charge a fee for some of this as the upload, download and mapping software development has cost me a load. It will not cost much and I will work it out on how much you supply vs how much you take. That is you give data and your get data for free - you want data and give none will cost something (yet to be worked out).Regards

David,

Works extremely well. Potential is mind blowing. Grid or Lat/Long? and ability to enter coords would be very useful I suspect. Is this connected to the Sat. Nav. thingy you were playing with earlier in the year?

Thanks I am impressed.

Potential is excellent. It was not originally with the Sat TRAK project but it now appears that they are interested in the development. I just did it for ExplorOz development actually. I have heaps of ideas on the go and yes the ability to enter Lat/Long or UTm data is also easy to implement. I currently working on adding some other data layers to include standard topo data such as vegitation zones, land cover and land use data - This will make the output look like a real map. I expect to have something loaded on this on Monday. It will enchace the result set even more.

Did you notice that we are integrating this mapping into some of the treks and also the shop products. The list goes on and on. Another idea is to be able to produce real time road conditions maps showing open, closed and caution roads on the fly in real time. Heaps of ideas, heaps of potential just need to work out the payment and cost structures to ensure that it is used and paid for in the correct way.

Glad you enjoyed the early experience. Just wait to see what comes out in the end. If you have any other ideas of feedback just let me know.Regards

David,

I've just tried this. When I try to plot the sample CSR plt, I get this error:

msLoadMap(): Unable to access file. (e:\inetpub\vs140204\uploads\iMapPlot\TrekNotes\Canning_Stock_Route.map)

Barry,

Thanks I just fixed the error - I changed ExplorOz from one server to another yesterday and I am still finding a few little things like this that I need to fix. It is working now.Regards

Hi David,

Looking good! Haven't got any .plt or .wpt files handy at the minute to have a real good play but your post reminded me that I was going to upload some more waypoints for you. Did you end up adjusting the system so that we could upload secondary classifications (ie. drinking water, POI, campsite etc) and/or a comments field?

David,

Congratulations on some fine work!
This has great potential. When do you plan to increase the size of the maps?

Thanks barry - I like it. Map size is not hard to adjust I can go as big or as small as you like. I have not finalised the map plot process yet as I am currently adding additional layers to the data base. These additional layers are land use and vegetation. Thus you will be able to produce maps that show coloured sections such as deserts and forests. These look much like a topo map. I am still struggling with time to get this and everything else done. I also need to work out the structure to recoop some of the costs for this project. My current thoughts and please give feedback are to allow you to view the maps completly in 300x300 mode and then when you are happy be able to output the maps in various scales 1:250K 1:500K 1:1M and 1:1.25M or even just a pixel size. I will then build the map and provide a download button which will allow download of the image and also the customised OziExplorer .map file to geoeference your new map directly into the mapping system (other mapping/GPS products to follow as soon as I have this one sorted), for this I would charge an amount say $5 per large map image. I am hoping to run this in a credit basis such as you get credits for upload and use credits for download or buy credits in the shop.

Anyway it will progress in the next few days as I expect to add the new layers to the server today or tomorrow. I may also need to move the iMapPlot process to another server to ensure that the process and performance do not interfere with ExplorOz. All these things need to be tested. So it is a little way off. Do you have a file the we can use for testing. ie. a track plot that you can drive again - I will be looking for some users to be able to test the resultant maps and .map files after the production.

I am also now linking the mapping function to the new PointPlace database that I started working on. This pointplace section allows people to load GPS point currently from .wpt file and reference them into a database. I then expect to be able to add these system loaded GPS points into the maps that are produced so this will add heaps and heaps of other points of interest to the maps that are produced. So you may pick up camps sites, shops, pubs etc etc in your maps. I then want to extend even furthur to support pics of each loaction and then load them and the description as proximity data for the waypoints on the maps so when you are getting close a pic will come up (in digital moving map mode) and a description or sound file will tell you about the POI that is in front or you. Very cool stuff if I can get it all working. I am sure I can it is just a time thing at the moment.

Any additional feedback welcome. I may stick this post back at the top of the forum so that other do not miss it. Regards
