Hi all,

I currently have a Samsung Mobile that has a port on the rear where I can fit a patch lead and external Ariel. Improves the signal strength in marginal areas considerably.
I'm contemplating joining the 21st century by upgrading to an IPhone 4s. What do others do to improve the signal strength. Can it be done? I've been told there is a cradle that can have a Ariel connected to it.
What have others done?

Regards from Col.

I haven't seen a system for the Iphone that I think is worth doing. I carry a Telstra T165i phone with antenna for emergency use in remote locations, it has been very impressive reception wise. The Iphone suffices for most times.

The Smooth Talker hands Free kit is relativly cheap and you can use whatever external antenna you like.

Yes I use the Smooth Talker kit with my iPhone.
It uses an inductive pick-up for the antennae which I was concerned about at first but it does work very well.

I live in a fringe area and my phone will go from a signal strength of zero bars in my driveway to 3-4 bars when placed into the cradle.

Very happy with it and definitely recommended.

Cost about $125 from memory.

The secret is still in the antenna. My brother owns a communications business and says there is only one brand of antenna to get for mobile phone communications.
RFI antennas models 2175 or 2195 are the best you can get.

The onlt thing I don't like about these is you need to take your Iphone cover off before you can plug the phone in. I use a hard case cover which is a bit of a pain to remove.

Have heard good reports about Little Devil Antennas which are not stocked by the usual comms place s. Far better reception than stock items if that's a priority. Can't remember the name of the proprietor but he was very helpful and quick to respond when I made enquiries. It's a little old now but Going Bush has some info on his setup. I'm interested in watching this further. We went in to replace a cheap phone that went swimming, and telstra have informed us that they are phasing out the phones with external aerial plugs. When we bought out Next G Blue Tick phones last year with external aerial they were only $50 or $60. Now the cheapest with an external aerial is over $300, and that's only while stocks last. Not happy.

Look in Kmart, BigW. I bought a Samsung FlipPhone blue tick with aerial port recently, $49

Most of the flip type have an aerial socket but it is behind a small bung that needs to be removed.
