electric brakes issues

Hello,
For a while I have been looking into why the trailer hubs are overheating when behind the 4WD (fine behind the car). I have measured the voltage of the redarc EB controller and it reads 5 volts when not touching the brakes, and goes up from there. Is this normal to have such a high unloaded voltage?

And if so, what else could be causing the hubs to overheat only behind 1 vehicle?

Thanks

Should be no voltage at all......when no foot on brake.

I had an occasion where a couple of strands of wire from my brake supply had shorted and were drawing foltage to the brakes,. Might be worth a look in the trailer wiring plugs, car and trailer. Cheers

As Redbakk has said, no voltage at all when foot not on brake, 5 volts means quite heavy braking applied, lucky you haven't shredded the tyres.

I'm with Redbakk
There should be no voltage, you have a electrical problem, as Zimmerlieman has stated I have found a lot of plugs that have crossed wire's, But Check your controller this is where I believe your problem is, if it is a crossed wire you would normally get a glow out of the lights with which one is crossed when brakes are applied(easier with LED). often its your brake light sensor at the brake peddle not returning to the off position as this is where most Electric brake controllers are tapped into the cars electrical system, I find that the H/duty electric Brake away hydraulic units are very prone for this, as they use the power wire to power the brakes & the Electric brake wire just runs the solenoids to activate the brakes so do not need much power from the controller to activate
Good luck

Hotsocks.

Firstly - I freely admit that I have had nothing to do with Redarc controllers. I am a Prodigy person myself.

Secondly - I have made the assumption that you have a separate Redarc in each vehicle.

As an aside this is why I use the Prodigy as it allows me to transfer the one controller between my vehicles and any others that have a Prodigy controller cradle and loom plug.

If you have a different type of controller in your car, then the Redarc is definitely on the list of 'suspects' in your 4WD setup.

However I would first eliminate the the brake activation wire/connection as the culprit by checking to see if there is any voltage in your brake lights when the foot is off the pedal. 5 volts will not illuminate a 12v globe enough for you to see it.

Next I would go for the outlet socket on the vehicle. Pull it apart and if there is any corrosion in the wire attachment sockets - piff it and get a new one - cut the ends off each of the coloured wires in the multi cable or wires to the socket so that they clean and shiny.

Re-fit the cables to the socket and re test it.

If you still have 5 volts there, then as the other guys have said, check the Redarc unit.

Only 2 things can cause overheating, bearings (too tight etc) or brakes. I have a Prodify and no voltage is present without braking as mentioned above. Brakes or controller issue by the sounds of it. As you mentioned issue just behind 1 x vehicle I presume 2 different vehicles and 2 different controllers.? If thats the case most likely the controller
