I have an 1994 80 series (1FZ-FE engine) that I have owned for over 10 years, had gas fitted about two years ago. It is coming up now close to 300k on the clock.

It's not showing any signs of issues but I am wondering is it likely that the motor is soon going to need to be rebuilt. I'm weighing up if it is time to replace the old girl and this would feed into the finances equation.

Thanks in advance.

That 4.5 engine has a strong reputation for longevity, although lpg can accelerate valve recession issues. This hopefully won't be a big issue for you if you haven't done many of the 300k on gas.

You can expect the engine to start using oil some time before 400k and to need a rebuild, or at least a head refresh, at around 500k

Thanks for the info Joe, that really helps. As long as all goes well should be a while yet then. I intend to keep on top of keeping the valves properly gapped.

The main issues with the valves is lubrication not so much adjustment. When I did my gas conversion I used Flash Lube which is an upper cylinder lubricant. It is cheap and effective. You can get a delivery systen that sucks it into the intake manifold under vacumn pretty cheap.

Ok thanks, I installed the Flash Lube as soon as the conversion was done. Gave me a scare once though I suddenly started blowing a lot of smoke, feared the worst but discovered the flash lube had gone out of adjustment, it used the whole bottle in 100km!

Hi, I have an 80s on gas, it has done 326,000, about 90,000on gas. the head is off now with a burnt valve due to bad service/tuning by the gas fitter. When the head came off it was clear she was running lean, the pistons/rings/bottom end etc are all in very good conditionand and will go a long way yet. The new head will have better valves and seats to take the extra heat from the gas. I am happy with the performance from gas, just p....d off with the tuner.Regards Keith

That sounds unlucky. Perhaps I need to get mine tuned up by an expert. The gas was fitted by another supposed expert but I've lost a lot of power. Runs smooth enough just no guts any more.

Just curious, what is all the work costing you to have the new head done?

Cheers,

Chris

Don't know, maybe close to 1000,Mech is a friend of mine who owns a workshop. The head was prob almost due for some work at 326,000, The car should be much better after the work.

Hi Keith
Lpg is very aggressive on std Toyota exhaust valves.
How often did you have the valve clearances checked during the 90k on gas?
The guy that installed lpg on my 80 said to check them every 20k.
Not a cheap exercise if you have to pay a mechanic.
Buy the time i had 40k up on lpg the exhaust valve clearances were on the minimum limit. and that was running flash lube as well.
And if not adjusted and left for another 20k the real possibility of burnt exhaust valves.

Rob S
How do you stop you valves recessing if the Flash Lube didn't work?
I have a 80 on LPG and caught the the valves closing up 11 months ago and reshimed them now running Flash Lube 1 mill per Litre of gas. nearly due to recheck them again as is 8 months since checked them and they had not moved in the first 3 months.
thanks Graham

Hi Graham
I can't say the flash lube didn't work as i fitted that when the lpg was installed.
All i know is that i only got 40k klm before a valve re shim running flash lube.
I don't think flash lube is guaranteed to eliminate VSR (valve seat recession)
Just help minimise it.
There is not much you can do to stop vsr, bar installing a gas head @ $1300 or so plus fitting, and then i have read reports that they don't last to long as well.
I run on petrol more than lpg these days for the general shopping stuff.

Imo lpg is best suited to older model engines with screw type valve adjustment
Like the tb42 engine in Nissan patrols ,2 guys and about half an hour and done, too easy .
No cams to remove, no shims to buy and change, like a 1fze.

Hi Rob
Thanks for the info re VSR I had a Ford Econovan with gas fitted new and at 40 000km valves had no clearance but it had screw adjuster so was no problem to adjust.
I run my 80 on gas 98% of the time the petrol is to dear .
Thanks Graham
