Wildflowers at Stirling Ranges

Just returned from a few days looking at wildflowers around Kojonup & the Stirlings. There was a very good display on at both locations and we now have nearly 200 extra photo's to identify.

We have one reference book "Flowesr & Plants of Western Australia" by Erickson, eorge,Marchant & Morcombe published in 1973 but it only displays colour photos ,for example, of 23 plants in the Stirling Range.

Can anyone help with the name of a good reference book available from our local library.

Many thanks

John & Helen

John and Helen,

There are several good one's available "Wildflowers of Southern Western Australia" is the one we mainly use it is by Margaret G Corrick, and Bruce A Fuhrer Edited by Alexander George.

From memory we got it from Dymocks in the city, another good one is Field Guide to the Wildflowers of Australia's South West by Jane Scott and Patricia Negus, again I think we got it from Dymocks.

Good Luck

Gidday

Amateur botanist and photographer Eddy Wajon (his description of himself) has published a number of guides to WA wildflowers, each covering different regions of the state. Part 2 Perth and the Southwest includes plants from the Stirlings.

He has taken a different tack to many by grouping the flowers by colour, rather than species. So if you are looking at a pink flower and don't know the difference between an andersonia and an utricularia you don't have to turn hundreds of pages, just look at the section on pink flowers.

The books are glovebox size guides so may not be something you would find at a library but a good book store should be able to source you one for around $20 ... I got mine direct from the man himself. A google search should help you track him down

Cheers

Hi John, Helen and Rocco,

I also use the books by Eddy Wajon and found them useful.
Part 3 "Esperance and the Wheatbelt" would also cover some of the area you visited such as Kojonup.

Glad to hear the flowers are out and beautiful as I will be there in a few weeks.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi J & H.

Erikson et al is a great start...but, yes, it is limited.

Florabase is a great free resource we use all the time. Chk out http://florabase.dec.wa.gov.au/search/advanced

There are stacks of field guides around for various genus' such as banksias - maybe do a search of your local library on-line catalogue which should link to the State data base for inter-library loans.

Cheers.
