Review: Canning Stock Route: A Travellers Guide

My Shop Item Rating: My Rating 5/5

"The Gard Book" as I heard it referred to by many travellers on the CSR can best be regarded as a bible for the route, written by people who have travelled the CSR quite a number of times. Many people we met along the way were referring to the wealth of information it contained, and also spoke kindly of its value.
It is written in sequence for a traveller proceeding from Wiluna north to Halls Creek, and as such, if you are travelling south it can be a bit difficult to follow.
I am not sure which edition we had a few years ago, but you can be certain this latest edition will be just as good as the earlier ones.
The directions of how to locate various points of interest, and the historical stories are excellent.

Hi Stuart

I agree it’s an indispensable guide to have with you when doing the CSR. Without it you would miss so much and not get a full appreciation what some of the sites/ sights are all.

I've done the CSR a number of times and enjoyed it each time. What surprised me was how many people didn’t do any research before they left and had never heard of the book, they travelled without it. Some when told said they weren't really interested in the detail just want to drive the CSR others were really annoyed they didn’t get one before they started.

We spent two night at Durba on one traverse and a camping neighbour borrowed my guide; he spent all day going through making notes so he didn't missed out on things on the next leg.

The current edition is number 3.

Happy travels
