Review: Canning Stock Route: A Travellers Guide

My Shop Item Rating: My Rating 3/5

It certainly is a great book, filled with lots of valuable information. I am surprised its importance has just surface as it has been around since the 1990's. I have all three editions and managed to get the first edition signed by the authors. I have recommended it to anyone I know who may be contemplating the journey along the CSR. I have travelled it three times so far, taking 18 + days for each trip. Once came across a guy trying to travel it in 6 days, what a waste of fuel, time and energy.

I'm jealous. Due to the time of doing it and taking that off work I'm years away from doing this trip.

Gossy,

Don't be put off by the thought of 'having' to do the whole CSR in one go. We did from Well 33 to Well 5 this year, with a side trip to Rudall River Ntl Park and really enjoyed the experience.

This years trip was a big loop starting and finishing in Alice Springs, that's where we left the dog! It was still a long trip, but clearly no where near as long as doing the whole trip.

We intend doing the northern section in a couple of years which we'll tie in with another adventure.

We lso used the book referenced and found it both interesting for a nightly history lesson as well as helpful on the track.

Rgds,
Rob

When travelling into the Rudall River NP this year on a 10 day trip, we also came across some intrepid travellers doing the CSR with a Rudall R diversion similar to RobnJan. Great trip as long as you plan your fuel supplies properly. Some of our friends started out into the Rudall and then ventured down the Canning from Well 23 fuel - a great trip as well. We turned around at the Rudall Crossing and went back out passed Hanging Rock on to Christie Crossing on the Oakover and then down along the rabbit proof fence through Balfour Downs to the Talawanna Track and into Newman as planned.
Plenty of great country to explore as long as you plan well.

We were lucky enough to actually do the CSR with Eric and Ronnie and what an experience it was, yes we also have the book and of course autographed by them. A very memorable trip of the Canning.
Just aside from that, I had dreamed of travelling the Canning from as far back as I can remember and often wondered where the dream had started from. As a kid I always listened to the stories of the 'old timers' as they were know then and it just so happened that my parents were friends with a couple of the old 'drovers' of by gone years, (I am talking back in the early 50's here) and I loved to listen to their stories that they were telling my parents. Well as it happens, when I read Ronnie's book I found that the Camaleer for Canning was no other than one of the Drovers that Dad and Mum use to invite over for tea, now I know where I got my dream from. LOL

Simba, our much missed baby.
