High Country Ideas

Gday All,

In the next 2 weeks we will be continuing our big trip. 30,000kms and counting. We are heading up into the high country for the first time. We have done a bit of driving, Kimberly, Simpson, Flinders etc. Driving an 02 Hilux. 3.0 litre

We want to drive from melbourne and end up at Mt Kosciuszko. Have looked at the Hema maps and there are obviously heaps of tracks up there. If any one has any ideas of a route that we can take it would be awesome. We have 3 or 4 days we can spend on the trip.

We are also looking at doing a couple of low range tracks if possible.

All ideas appreciated

Cheers

With just 4 days I'd head over the Black spur to Alexandra, Eildon, Jamieson refueling at Mansfield before taking the Buller rd to Mt Stirling & Craig's Hut. Drop down Monument, Bindaree falls camping along the Howqua river.
Up to Bluff hut, Lovicks hut across to the Howwit plains then drop down to Wonnangatta via Zeka spur. From the bottom end of the valley up Wombat spur, along the Cynthia range camping at Pioneer Racecourse or Talbotville.
Up Collingwood spur to Grant then down to Dargo to refuel. Take the Dargo river rd then climb up to Mt Birrigun, dogs grave then onto Omeo. Refel again then Benambra rd, Beloka rd cutting accross to camp on the Buckwong creek. Down to Tom Groggin via Davies plain & up the Alpine Highway to Thredbo.
This route gives a taste of the High Country including a few of the iconic attractions & plenty of challenging climbs but as it covers a big distance you'd need to keep moving & possibly change plans if it rains.
Have fun, cheers Craig.......

Thanks for the info. Might have to take an extra day so we can relax a bit more and not have to worry as much. sounds like we will get a good look around and it wont be our last trip in the area.
Cheers

You mentioned some good 4WD tracks there. Not sure that I would see all of this as 'doing a couple of low range tracks'! There is quite a bit of exciting low 4 with this plan, plus quite a few river crossings.

I also would not attempt some of these tracks after a spell of heavy rain. Coming out of Wonnangatta will also require an interesting river crossing, especially if it had been raining recently.

It was mentioned on Macka this morning that Zeka Spur is closed due to it becoming muddied up following rain. Apparently it was recently bulldozed and the wet has pugged it up iso Crackles route will have to be changed.

To detour Zeka from Craig's hut take the Speculation track to Cobbler lake (camp) then Abbeyard track, Harry Shepards then Wonnangatta track. Parks have been getting jumpy lately closing wet tracks at short notice.
Cheers Craig.....

thanks for the helpful info guys.

Taking into account my small amount of time and the closure of Zeka spur track and potential for a not so good water crossing at Wonnangatta.

Looking at the idea of maybe following the start of crackles ideas up to Howitt hut and then possibly down the Howitt rd to the gorge then follow the Moroka rd to Castle Hill tk and then acroos junction spur tk then back up crooked river tk back to talbotville and then down grants tk.

Any advice on this route. Looking at leaving melbourne on Sat 5 Nov. And obviously will check with parks re track closures on the firday.

Cheers again for the help
