Recently my son wrote off my 4WD so I've been looking at a replacement vehicle. Have looked at a couple of 2006 Hyundai Terracan turbo diesel manuals and they seem nice vehicles but I don't know much about them. Basically what I am looking for is a 7 seater 4WD turbo diesel manual that can tow a medium (2,000 kg) caravan. Appreciate any comments on the Hyundai Terracan and things I should be looking out for in a second hand vehicel (do they have a timing belt or timing chain ?). Cheers, Old Mal

I've had my Terracan since 2005 and it is still going
well.
Original
suspension was way too sloppy so fitted Ironman torsion bars at front and coils in the rear with firmer shockies. Also added air bags for towing.
Also added
snorkel and cargo barrier. A Tuning box can be added easily but standard torque is very adequate at around 354Nm. Fuel is around 9 to 11litres/100km...depending on your style. Best I ever had was 940km out of the 75litre

For those who like going off road, front and rear lockers are available.
Plenty of other owners I know tow an assortment of vans with no issues. Some use WDH. Maximum towed weight is 2500Kg.
Timing belt is replaced every 90,000km. Diesel filters are expensive if bought from Mr H so buy original Delphi from $55 to $75 every 30,000km. Kia or Repco oil and air filters are cheaper than than Mr H. Buy a
Scangauge II or similar to know what is happening with your engine and fuel consumption. Evidently motor is designed by VN Motori, gearbox by Aisin. Both good.
Try the

site (Scroll down) It has been running for about six or more years.
Surprisingly cheap for the package...probably because it is not the Big "T", "N" or "M".

Sorry to hear about your 4wd, hope your son is OK!
I have owned Toyota and Nissan 4wd in the past and have owned two Terracans, a petrol and now diesel auto. I also currently own a new Hilux. I highly recommend the Terracan, they have been very reliable and capable vehicles, the diesel is an outstanding tow vehicle for the money. Actually I found it did a better job of towing my 1.5 ton camper than both the previous highly regarded companys products. It is a great shame that Hyundai decided not to replace it with a new model!
As Minty says, you need a
suspension upgrade, but from my experience they all do (maybe more so with the Terracan though!). Check out the site Minty directed you to, you will find the answers to all your questions there.

Check the vehicle handbook for towing info as it varies between years.
One model has a tow capacity of 2450Kg with a max ball weight of only 150Kg.
The most popular model has a tow capcity of 2500Kg with a ball weight of 200Kg which can be increased to 250Kg if fitted with the Hyundai 'Trek n Tow' rear
suspension package.

I had a 2008 Terracan T/Diesel from new & sold it at about 12,000k's for personal reasons & not because of the vehicle. It was sold local by a dealership & bought by a Mail Contractor. I recognized my vehicle one day & talked to the owner about reliability, and he stated that the only problem he had was the front
suspension had collapsed & spare parts from Hyundai were unavailable. He stated that he eventually used Mitsubishi components that apparently were the same. He is still using the vehicle today as I often see it around. I found it to be a good little vehicle although the
suspension left a lot to be desired. Surprisingly it's fuel consumption lph for a diesel was only a little less than my 200 Cruiser (petrol) on a trip.

Never heard of a front
suspension collapse in ten years of interest in all things Terracan! The parts really are not that interchangable with Pajero, except rear springs! It could have been a case of bad service to the point that bolts became loose and fell out.
Your Terracan sounds like it had a problem as I had a 100 series Cruiser (petrol) and it could never come close to the fuel consumption of the diesel Terracan. The Terracan regularly returns 8.5 lph and 12 to 13 lph towing a 1.5 ton brick into a headwind!! I don't like to think how much I spent towing with the petrol Cruiser, it was the main reason I went for the smaller Diesel, I have a high regard for theToyota product ( I have a new Hilux) but unless you need to tow a very heavy load the Terracan, based on value for money wins every time!

Don't try & compare the 100 series with the 200, the 200 is more economical even though it is heavier. In regard to the
suspension problem, The mail contractor had no reason to lie, he was just stating the facts at the time. Beside bolts shoudn't come loose & fall out. The VM Motori is not the most economical diesel around. In regard to my fuel consumption, I did a trip (not towing) from Qld border to
Rockhampton & back & it returned 11.9lph, not sparing the right foot. The 200 usually will get get 12.5 - 12.9lph on a trip with similar driving style. Going by your signature it would appear that you may be a little one eyed though !
