Hi all, just over three years ago I put up a thread on here in relation to a stolen Heritage Caravan, nothing had been heard about it in all that time and the owners Insurance paid out on it.Well the otherday the Van turned appeared back on the radar. It was advertised for sale and a guy went around and bought it, ( it was in a suburb down the hill from us LOL) as it was unregistered he took it to the Licensing Branch to re- register it and, Voilla, the Vin number came up as stolen, The Police were notified and the previous owner contacted. Thus ends the saga of the stolen caravan. Thanks again to all who kept a look out for it at the time.

Cheers

Hi Road Warrior, not as yet, got the message last night but the fact that the van was picked up from a house in the Eastern suburbs would be a good place to start, shouldn't be too hard to sniff out the culprit. When I was reminded that it was over three years ago I couldn't believe it. It's not the first time that has happened though, one guy had a stolen van parked up on hus block of land in the bush for a few years,he decided to sell it, it just happened that as the buyer was driving it through Vic Park (again to get it licensed) the correct owner was standing on the footpath waiting to cross the road when he noticed the van with some particular markings on the side, he reported it and the guy who stole the van copped a few years jail, but that was back in the seventies, probably won't get too much of a dressing down now.Moral of the story, don't buy an unregistered Van LOL.

You would have to feel for the poor guy who bought the stolen Heritage as he has likely lost his money and the van. I guess the insurance company would be its official owner as they paid it out, and the guy who sold it has probably spent the cash already.

Spot on Ian and Sue, it is unfortunate for the poor guy who bought it. we do feel for him. I will be interested to hear any more of this saga, maybe the Insurance company will be a bit lenient, (one, two, three......pigs flying by LOL) Having said that the Insurance company paid the original owner out the full value of a new van, they didn't add appreciation to it.

Love to hear those stories Dunworkin , and hope it leads to justice for the guilty.

We certainly use all means possible like stolen vehicle register, write off listings, finnace owing checks etc and these have proved useful in the past and worth the extra few dollars they cost.

I so agree with you Robin re the checks, unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who are unaware that these checks can be made. It is very dicey buying privately these days, having said that you can be caught buying through car yards as well, but that is another story, (same family different 'long' story).

I remember years ago in the Western District of Victoria a fellow bought a tractor from a clearance sale. He supplied false ID & of course worthless cheque too. Had the vehicle on his property for about 8 yrs & decided to sell it. The new buyer decided to register the tractor & Bingo...one recovered stolen tractor. Mr Shifty got a knock on the door & subsequently arrested & charged.
