Zj: I fitted a reversing-mirror clip-on screen and camera bought off the internet: get the clip-on which has full-sceen image (7 inch, I think) not just the little 3.5 inch image (like Jaycar sells).

About $50 for camera and $50 for mirror/monitor. Mine is a mid-width angle, not wide-angle camera (but depends on your vehicle and personal needs).

Normal "colour camera with IR" shows up hot bodies (pedestrians, little kids) at night, so buy 2 cameras - one for forward view to pick up 'roos at night! Wire one camera through reversing lights and one through ignition or lights (or such). (The Mirror/monitor takes 2 inputs)

All made in China and mine's been going 5 years of long, rough driving.
The only down-side is, over time, the weight of the mirror/monitor may loosen the mirror swivel-mount and make your mirror flop down on bumpy road - just tighten the screw to stop this. Even got water in the camera (deep flood) and it dried itself out after a week or two and still works perfectly!
Cheap, easy to fit and bugger-all to replace if it ever does fail!

Hi Zj

Just be sure you get a camera with the right focus for your needs. A reversing camera has close up focus and is fitted pointing towards the the ground. A rear view camera is one usually chosen by caravanners for the rear of their van to see traffic behind, is set pointing into the distance along the road and has good distance focus.

i was looking around for a while at reverse cameras
as said above the camera needs to be good quality
i looked at the ebay ones but they sounded to cheap and a friend who recently bought one wasnt happy.
i did a bit of research and the gator brand came up with good reports
so i bought one through repco about $180
the unit is wireless if its on a car or wired for a caravan i held it up behind the van wireless and it worked perfect but they recomend wiring it because of interfearance
great vision and night cammera as well i thought the night camera wasnt working because i couldnt see the 3 leds light up but they must be i/r perfect vision
cheers

Brash Imports Try here. They have monitors and cameras plus useful info on choosing the type of camera. CMOS is standard but most models have a CCD version for better resolution, although at near double the price.
I found their service very efficient, just bought a GPS with a reversing camera as an option. Can't comment on the camera yet though, haven't had time to install it.

Thanks for your advice everyone . Much appreciated
Have also discovered there's a difference between a reversing camera and rear view camera.
Thanks again
