I recently purchased 2002 3.0 td patrol 69 000 on clock engine change 14000 ago. Now after one week of ownership power getting really slack and a rotational whine noise, sounds in drivetrain or gearbox when on highway at 2500 or below, as if something is out of round.
Driven Gq's, troopies, gxl's, high luxes. Patrol is a nice rig, bit carish compared to most, suits my handbrake, prefers sports cars(inpracticle). I intend keeping this rig for awhile, with many big trips planned all over, but am now concerned with all the negative talk sounds as though extra warranty is the go, I just hope all the problems arent written to be an incentive for owners to spend more buy going to extra warranty but still bearing in mind how much you pay for plastic coated overToy-o-ta gold.
Apart from my concerns it is nice off road, if anything ride is soft as is factory suspension.

My boss has a 2002 3.0l T, only about 19k on the clock, never been off road, serviced reguarly and he just had it go into fail safe modeon the way to work. Nissan towed it away and said that there was something blocking the oxygen sensor, got it back a day later, now he is lacking in power at take of and blowing heaps of black smoke when reversing or taking off. (it's an auto). Don't know if it is similar or not to the problem you are having...

Possibly an EGR valve. Mine needed replacement at 48K.

lists of possibles
incorrect injector and or pump timing
compression (low or uneven)
air in the fuel sys or dirt binding the fuel sys,
injecetors (might be up the bleep ,did u replace then or reuse)
i know it sounds to silly but could even be just a dirty air filter
just a few things to take off your list of possibles
cheers

Never ceases to amaze me as to all the problems with these 3.0 ltr Patrols. I own a 1983 2H diesel Sahara with an origonal 235,000 ks and it is fitted with an aftermarket Turbo. Apart from out pulling these Patrols up any mountain range, it has cost me nothing to maintain and starts first time even if left idle for a month. It may be old but its reliable, so it makes you wonder is it worth spending over $50,000 to get inundated with a unreliable vehicle. I say all this not as a means of creating a debate but as a matter of fact.

Sorry Chris have to disagree i own a 3lt Patrol i will not deny the fact that we have had a few problems with it but Nissan has fixed them without much drama and i can guarantee you that we get a more comfortable ride on and off road compared to your cruiser and better fuel economy( i know i owned one like yours). As to out pulling Patrols up hills again i have to disagree we tow horse floats and race car transporters with our Patrol and i have not to this day been passed by a Cruiser going up hill towing the same weight, has happened the other way around on numerous accasions though. On a final note i do not know about the rest of you on this site but i joined to get info on travel and general off road information, sure post it if you have a problem with your vehicle and hopefully someone can help but i am really starting to tire of logging on and finding a post from someone bagging another make of vehicle every one has there own opinions i know and you are entitled to voice them if need be but if you do not own that vehicle then how can you judge it.

Martin sorry to upset your applecart, but my mate has a 2001 3Ltr Patrol and I can assure you that from a standing start from the bottom of the Toowoomba Range to the top he lags behind. I can only surmise that the Turbo Toyota that you had may have been a bit lacking in the engine department. No offence, but I get 12 Ltrs to the 100 K, and am willing to put up with the harsh ride for the sake of reliability and I am not bagging Nissans as you might think, so I stick to my comments even if it gets up your nose. (I tow a 2 ton boat). Cheers.

Whats the use in buying a vehicle that has to be fixed by the dealer all the time, I for one like to get in a vehicle and know that I will get home again without major breakdowns.

Stick to the tried and proven models I say.

I drive a 4.2 GU Turbo and after 5 years of trouble free motoring.
