Eyre to Eucla

Hi all,

Has anybody driven the coast track from Eyre to Eucla, and if so any problems or anything else of note?

Thinking of visiting between Christmas and New Year.

Thanks
Alan

Hi Alan,

I haven't done that section of the coast, I've been as far east of Madura then came back west.

I highly recommend the book Across the Bight and Nullarbor by R and V Moon. I found it most useful for the Madura to Israelite Bay leg. The book is avail from EO.

cheers
Phil

Hi Phil,

There's a track most of the way on Google Earth, I can only assume the sections all link up.

Cheers for the book recommendation, I will try and a borrow a copy.

Gday,
We only drove down to the Eyre Bird Observatory. And then came back out the same way. The road down there was fine. It gets a bit slow as you get closer to the observatory but that is only because of the sand and corners.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Hi Fergo,

I went to Eyre and back to the main highway in 1997. A great spot and the Telegraph Station is terrific.

Thanks

Hi Alan,
Cant help East of Madura. I did do from Esperance to Madura two weeks ago. If you have Oziexplore I can send you my track logs. All up we did 900 km off road. Most tracks can be done in 2wd. The beach at Cape arid was great we did over 110km on the beach at around 70kmh seals fish whale bones etc. Would recomend this trip if you have the time.

Hi Craig,

Some plots are already here on Exploroz of that area - if you went from Eyre to "Madura Beach" I'd be interested in the plot file - equinox at iinet.net.au -thank you.

I see there is a track following the escarpment from near Eyre to Madura, you may have done this one, looks good wish I was there now, though that one will only be a backup egress track this trip.

Cape Arid beach sounds nice, a pity I won't make it that way soon.

Cheers
Alan

Hi Alan,
The Eyre to Madura track is marked turning off the Eyre Bird Observatory track at the base of the Escarpment. As you drive east there is two tracks to choose from one that follows the Escarpment and the other runs through the plain following the telegraph line. A word of warning there is a lot of spear grass and a guard for your radiator is a must. Failing this like me you will need to stop every so often and pull out all the grass and seeds out of the radiator.
Depending on time I would also put on the table;
Caiguan down to Baxter’s Memorial (great Cliff camp for the night) then it’s a half day drive on a very interesting and not well used track across the top of the escarpment then down to the beach at Twilight Cove. There is a brilliant camp about 1km east of where the Cliffs meet the beach. Then it’s less than a 1 day drive along the beach then through the Eyre bird observatory to Madura beach.

Regards
Craig

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the heads up on the spear grass, will take some protection with me.
Twilight Cove looks and sounds interesting, will certainly check it out.

Cheers
