Canning Stock Route

We are thinking of doing the Canning in late July and August 2012.We have a 2006 Prado, untouched and an Aussie Swag camper. Are there any modifications anyone would suggest to the Prado and are we better off to swag it than tow the camper? We will be ith another vehicle (Landcruiser). We have done a reasonable amount of off road travels but this one has me a bit concerned.

hi lance
my choice would be swags and carry your camping gear in the prado if you dont have kids you will have plenty of room and that time of the year is the best time to do csr the weather is very enjoyable most years subject to unforseen extremes
there is no way i would tow a camper along the csr in preference to just driving w/out one
both my trips on the csr were done camping in a small tent the first trip only did the csr and then had to go straight back to work
the second trip i used a swag its just so enjoyable if your well organized

the second trip included broome for a week and then karratha after csr and then karrajini national park and newman through to mt augustus
and the kennedy ranges to dongara and home along the coast thoroughly enjoyed swagging it- so easy !
and a lot less fuel is required as well and easier getting up the dunes
but thats my opinion !!
its your choice
cheers barry

We did the Canning a few years ago towing an Ultimate with a Landcruiser 100 series automatic. We had no trouble at all and remained in high range for the whole journey. Because we had the trailer we had to join the CSR at Well 5. Although we left the CSR at well 33, I don't believe that we would have trouble doing the remaining section. Used 23.5 litres per 100km.
I would say that about 1/3 of all vehicles we saw were towing camping trailers.
If you relax at a faster pace you can get more relaxation in for a given time.

Lance M2,

Depending on how far along the CSR you intend to go, but my understanding is that CT's are banned down around the Well 4 and 5 area, happy to be proved wrong, but I think you will find that to be the case.

Some are going to kill me for this but I will say it anyway.

If you have an untouched Prado does that mean you are new to serious 4WD not just running up and down a few weekend tracks. If I am right I would suggest that you get some serious training and experience before doing such a track on your own. Maybe even joining a club to go out with them and learn from them and study their cars.

Sorry but that is my opinion. I have been an army all vehicle unrestricted driver, an army driving instructor and a recovery mech's offsider as well as a private driving instructor. Even with such experience I would not do it myself with just my wife and I, until I upgraded both our car and myself to be totally self sufficient. Others may bit I won't.

Actually I do hope that my initial assumption was wrong.

Do you know if the display is going anywhere else?

It's just too far from the east coast.

Lance,

You might have left you run a bit late for getting ready to do the Canning.
here is a check list of what is needed for your trip.
1. Cargo Barrier positioned behind the front seats
2. Up grade your vehicles suspension, keep the old shocks and take them with you[ if they are still good]
3. Remove all the back seats
4. Remove any driving lights, you will not need them
5.Fix a storage system in the back of the vehicle.
6. Make room for a couple of Jerry cans to be placed in the back of the vehicle. If the vehicle is a diesel you should make it to Well 23. What ever fuel is left over after filling the tanks on the vehicle, fill the Jerry cans rather than leafing it behind.
7. Order fuel to be dropped off at Well 23 6 weeks before you plan to be there.
8. Apply for a permit, this is also full of information.
9. You will also need, sand flag, UHF radio HF radio and or Sat phone, spare engine belts, air compressor, maps, welding kit, first aid kit, and a realistic time table.
10. Keep the vehicle as light as possible, forget the camper and swag or tent the trip.

This is a good starting point for the trip. Remember to keep the vehicle as light as possible, don't rush the trip and take plenty of photos.

Its been in Canberra for over 12 months and only here in the west for one month.
The website doesn't (I couldn't find it) say where its going next.

See here for more about it,

Hi Phil

I thought that was an aboriginal art and history thing. That's the last thing I want to see. I have seen enough rock art to sink a ship. We didn't bother as we are after information on the actual drive itself.

Thanks
