Can anyone advise me if the road between Rockhampton and Mt Morgan is suitable to tow a 22' van on.

Thanks

There is a sign stating that the road ( Burnett Hwy ) is not suitable however there is an alternative route called Razorback Rd . Is has far less curves but has one steep section about 400 m long ( I'm guess about 10-15 % grade ). I havent towed a van along it but have seen truck & dog trailers using it .

Just had a look at it on contour map , it climbs about 50 m in 300 or 17 %

I cant comment dorectly on the twisty main range road, becasue I have never driven it, but I came down the razorback a few weeks ago and the road is pretty non-eventfull....that drop off is a good one.......you would not want to be short on power transmission cooling or brakes and you would want you weight distributed properly.

Like everything...it depends on your set up, and your, capability, skill and experience.

Mt brotherinlay came up the main range recently and complained that he was buggered from all the gear shifting, and he was not towing...look at the map then tripple the number of corners on the actual road.

I can see why, they try to warn caravans off in a lot of places.....there are plenty out there who are very capable and have well sorted out rigs and can handle a large caravan in difficult situations...BUT there are plenty out there that simply do not have the apttude and regardless of experience should stay with the easier and safer options.

People with caravans get into trouble doing things beyond their ability every day.

Heavy vehicles come up and down the main range every day.

The question is where are you trying to get to, it may be wiser to go another way, up thru Caliopy and in that way perhaps.

cheers

If one can negotiate the road with a 45ft Tri-Axle trailer then I can't see any reason why you can't tow a 22ft Caravan on it...but then......

It would've been an idea to let us in on the tug but having said that, I towed an 18'6" 2 tonner up there with an old LR Defender without any probs at all.

About 3 months back we ambled through there for the first time, towing an 18' van behind the L Cruiser - in my view, 22' would be ok even though it is quite 'circuitous' in places. As for the drive - we justed wanted to go down the map from Rocky while avoiding the Bruce - had we known it was mountain goat country, we might have taken another route - didn't see a level bit of road all the way through and well beyond Mt Morgan as I recall. Our run was also not helped by very lengthy road work delays.

Rusty,
The best road is the Razorback Road if you think you might have problems with the twists and turns of the range road.
Go west of Gracemere a few kms to Kabra; not very far and turn off the Capricorn Hwy there. The road changes its name many times but eventually becomes Razorback Road into Mt Morgan. Morgan Street in Kabra becomes Kabra Road, then McEvoy Road, Four Mile Road, Moonmera Road then Razorback Road.
There is one steep pull of a few hundred metres as mentioned above but it is straight up without any turns so slow and steady is the way to go. I have pulled our camper which is about 5.5m and had no trouble or even looked like it.
