I have a Blackwidow cargo barrier with a divider and shelf. These are bolted to the Blackwidow drawer system in the rear of my 100 series Landcruiser.
I would like to be able to take my grandchild with me and need to work out how to safely attach the child safety seat to the cargo barrier.
I am sure someone else has done this before. Any suggestions?

I've heard of people placing a steel bar across the back of the barrier and attaching the seat to that. Having said that, I would think that there isn't a safe way to attach a child seat to a cargo barrier. If somebody has done it, ask them how it performed in an accident. I'd get it done professionaly.

Hi Rob,
I don't know if the 100 is the same as some 80's, but mine as a set of bolt holes in the roof just inside the cargo area. The strap then passes through the barrier.
I've a GXL, I believe the standard barn door model don't have them.
Just pull your hood lining rubber back and have look.
Blokes with 80's and barriers have done it this way.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers.

Thanks Jon & Karen,
I had a look and could not see any obvious bolt holes. The manual shows some attachment points on the floor just where the drawers are.

Hi Rob,
It was worth a look, I'm not at all familiar with the 100, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

I thought I knew the 80 pretty well, amazing the bits and pieces that I've discovered myself or from others that have found things hidden away under carpet or behind plastic molding that has never seen the light of day and their not in the Factory workshop manual.

Good luck with and I hope you find a solution.

Cheers.

Rob,

My blackwidow drawers have the child restraint hooks attached to them. All they do is drill a hole through the front wall of the drawer case and bolt through the proper hooks for the child restraint. If yours don't have them already I'm sure you could buy the hooks from them and get them to tell you exactly where to drill the holes.

Yes, when supplied by Black Widow. It is something you can order at the time of purchase. I was expecting something more than just a hole drilled with the anchor bolt supplied but that is all there is to it, hence my comments that you could easily drill the hole yourself, if you have the correct location, and install proper anchor bolts.

That is useful to know. I will approach Black Widow to see if they can retro-fit one.

Outback also do the same. A hole drilled in the front of it with an anchor. Need to request this at time of ordering. I don't think they retrofit, but it is not hard to drill your own hole if you could find out where the company does it.

Attaching it to the cargo barrier is a no-no. You have to attach to an approved restraint point, either the original ones or have aftermarket ones fitted and certified. Had a shorty Pajero once that had no restraint points and had to have a bar fitted across the back to which the child seat was connected. PITA as the bar went straight across the back, full width at window height...

Hi John,
I was just ready through some threads in Lcool on 100's, couldn't find anything about there being anchor points in the roof, but there was a thread about how the third row seat anchors are NOT rated for the child restraints, weird but true. The guys also mentioned how there are some dodgey setups, attached to draws and cargo barriers.

Rob,
I reckon a phone call to the RTA, I know, they'll send you around in circles and have you jump through hoops, but at lest you'll get the right answer, maybe ;)

I will try Black Widow first. I can not imagine that they would fit them if they were not approved. They would be leaving themselves open to litigation.

Although I have a Patrol, I have black widow drawers and half cargo barrier and divider. There are nuts built into the drawers to attach the child seat anchors to them on the front vertical face, just fold down seat backs and check your drawers for the same. As above dont attach anchor to cargo barrier. In my previous patrol I didnt have drawers and the cargo barrier had holes in it so the seat straps passed through it and I had anchors points put in the floor professionally. I have also seen spreader bars put in across old falcon wagons at rear seat height, similar to what was mentioned above, but doubt you'll need that with the drawers.

I did have a look for that; I did see some captive nuts, but they did not seem to be large enough to anchor a child seat. I may be mistaken, I will have another look.

Hi ChrisE
I just had a look again and the captive nuts are 6mm. The ADR34/01 calls for a 5/16" UNC bolt which is almost 8mm diameter.

In WA we can contact "KID Safe" they will check off or install your seat for a nominal fee. Was very cheep. In WA you can also go to the companys that modify the cars for the mines and they have kits that can be installed to most cars that comply with the ADR's they will install and up-date your compliance plate with the attachment.

I dare say NSW will have something similar.

Craig
