Hi All

which ones?

My rear seals are leaking, just one side but i'll get both fixed but where to buy them.

"Ebay" - approx $250 full kit / both sides

"Terrain Tamer" - $47 each side. they tell me its the full kit including all seals etc, i question why so cheap - he tells me they make them and keep prices low!

"Toyota" spare parts - each side = outer bearing $45.25. inner bearing $51.40 outer seal $26.65 inner seal $13.90 paper gasket $3.10 = $140 each side x 2 = $280.00 i also get 20% off (land cruiser club member) = $225

leaning towards Toyota like $100 more for genuine parts, Terrain tamer seams too cheap i know there are probably just as good but........!

let me know your thoughts

regards Steve

Hi Steve,
Bushes for my rear springs in the Hilux were;
Toyota - $260
Terrain Tamer - $28.

If you were to ring a bearing supplier and get a price on a seal and bearing of similar size I thing you would find that TT are on par. Pop the badge on the packaging and add the $$$$..

Regards
Craig

The seal that is leaking is most likely the rear axle oil seal that keeps the diff oil in. The seal may have slid out. You'll probably find the bearings are swimming in oil.

The I've used both Genuine Toyota and Terrain Tamer rear bearing seals and you cannot tell the difference. Terrain Tamer use the japanese Koyo bearings. $47 each side is for a rear wheel bearing kit. You will also need to buy a pair of rear axle oil seals (about $10-15 each).

The "Ebay" quote sounds like a full front seal kit, not the rear.

Do the bearings need to be replaced? I have replaced bearings once (probably didn't need to though) and done the seals numerous times over the years on the 60 and 100. I usually get aftermarket seals, but lately tending to get genuine and have them last longer!!

G'day Steve

Your post is interesting regarding the variation in prices for the parts you require.

All things over the counter at Toyota are dear as poison but you and of course I ~ pay for the brand if we buy what is supposedly genuine. Toyota make very few replacement parts especially for the 80 series Cruisers, most of the consumable products like what you are looking at buying are made for Toyota and sold through Toyota in a Toyota package/box.

The Terrain Tamer parts and products are just as good if not better and TT back their products 100%.

I personally deal with Terrain Tamer in Kewdale ~ Perth, I have no affiliation with them apart from being a customer ~ very satisfied with their attitude and their Terrain Tamer labled products. I can't recommend them highly enough, simply because they care about who they are and they care about YOU as a purchaser of their product.

It's something Toyota used to pride themselves on.

I've never delt with anyone on Ebay, but who's to say what is available on line isn't any good, it is just that you are dealing with "faceless" people.

Safe travels :

Steve,

There is nothing wrong with Terrain Tamer stuff.
I have replaced all the front bearings and seals with there product and not only is it cheaper than Toyota but they supply a complete kit to do the job.
Even replaced all the brake rotors, front and rear, for less than any other quote that I have got.
Even there suspension kits come with all the parts that you need.

Hi Steve,

I also use Terrain Tamer for a few parts never any problems and they are also very easy to deal with.

I do check my wheel bearing often and no problems at all.

That's my 2 bobs worth, just a happy customer.

Go for it

When I had my hilux I had to do the front swivel hubs/bearings seal etc and got a price from Toyota, then went to a bearing place in Blacktown and kid you not the bearings were exactly the same, brand engraved in them started with a T ?? (cant remember now), and also come in a toyota box !! and were a third of the price, I did buy genuine seals though as I was told they were better quality. Some things you can see for yourself eg radiator hose, check out a genuine one then get an after market one, the rubber is so thin on the after market ones its scary. I would buy the bearings from a bearing shop but get genuine seals (just my opinion)..............

Toyota use Koyo brand bearings in their vehicles, so a toyota brand bearing is going to be a koyo in a toyota box, or repackaged...thesame bearing at ses or cbc will be 50-70% less. Look up the local bearing supplier, cbc and ses are near me...then go down there and ask for the price for a kit....you will get good quality and usually half price to Toyota.

If your rear axle has been leaking for a while you will probably find like I did that the shoes in your handbrake drum are soaked with diff oil and require replacing on that side.

Bought a set and changed them on both sides and like most toyotas they worked much better......for a few weeks.......

Cheers.
