Hi all
Most of us use computers every day even when touring out in the back blocks. we use them for mapping, downloading digital photos and so on.

I became aware of a potential huge price rise in hard disk prices due to Thailand floods

See here;
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/103711-hdd-pricewatch-you-know-where-its-going-we-tell-you-how-much-its-going-to-hurt

So if you're looking at getting extra memory or thinking of taking a portable hard disc with when you go bush get onto it soon.

cheers

What is the PPS system?

Is that another SMS abbreviation?

Gday Phil
Sorry old son , I have given you an answer that did not relate to the post . I read it as gps and it was not.
PPS is a paper GPS like a map.

Plenty of 1Tbyte USB disks on sale for cheap leading up to Christmas. Saw 1 1Tbyte disk for $69. Dick Smith I think but not too sure as I have thrown the catalog out. No need to panic. Christmas prices will be low as retailers are doing it tough (so they tell us).

Hi Phil

We have been advised from a number of Rep lately that there will be mega problems that will lead well into the second quarter of 2012. It is not just computers that will be effected, the range includes, many types of household appliances, eg fridges, washing machines, set top boxes for digital TV, digital cameras, other small household appliances and then there are the automotive parts for many of the big players and the list goes on.

One Rep had a tour planned of one of the factories, but has now been cancelled as the factory is now 2 metres under water.

Like they say, if you are thinking of replaces a product, buy it now as there will be up to 6 months wait for the factories to come back on line and to start to produce their products again.

Cheers

Hi Mazcan,
You're probably right about that - but of course this matter is a worldwide problem not just an Oz matter.

Hi Barry

In our shop situation, we would see around 99.5% of laptops compared to desktops. Like they say, they can everything that their bigger non portable brothers can do.

Cheers

Not worried about the stuff in the car. We have anough SD cards for the indash unit.

No not really the case. There's always a little bit of spin doctoring to stimulate the market. I am in the industry and we buy hundred of drives every month, plenty of stock around as the pricing inidicates, so so cheap $$ per GB..

Even a huge price rise wouldn't make them as expensive as they were, a few years back.

Maybe 5 or 6 years ago, bought a Maxtor 350gB external hard drive, for about $380. Its bigger than a Tom Clancy novel, and needs its own 240v power pack.

A few weeks ago, saw & bought a Seagate 500gB hard drive at local post office - $69!!! It fits in the pocket of my work shirts, and is powered by USB. What more could you want, unless it's a 1TB, for less than $90.

Bob.

The ones that are moving first are the desktop units. Have seen prices almost double for some sizes here in Brisvegas.
Industry commentators suggest a 50 million unit shortfall over Xmas, so if you're in the market it would be good to buy now before the channels dry up.
