Hi all,
Before all of you bag me for having a Disco... I get it all the time so I'm pretty hardened by the jokes...
Anyway seriously I am finding that when I accelerate to about 40km/h I am receiving a rather prominent vibration throughout the rear of the vehicle, it smooths out at about 50km/h and then returns at 60km/h. Once I hit 80-100km/h it seems to disappear.
I have taken the mud tyres off and put my all terrains back and and it hasn't alleviated it. Ive had a visual inspection of the rubber prop shaft coupling and it has one crack in it.
1. Can this one crack cause all this vibration???
2. Can the coupling lose its firmness or structure making it weak?
3. Can you think of any where else it could come from?
4. What is the big lead weight near the right hand front
suspension and should it be loose or rigid?
Any help would be fantastic..

Mate, I believe that vibration in early diesel Discos is a fairly common thing. Your best source of info is definately aulro.com. They now everything Land Rover on that site. Cheers Mike

G'day Hux,
A crack in the rubber coupling certaining wont be helping and I wouldn't be too surprised if it is the cause of your drama.
Obviously here isn't a bad place to ask - as there are a few here that will really know, hidden among the many that will question your choice of vehicle.

How many kms. have you done when the vibration first noticed?
With
mine ('97, bought new) it developed a rear pinion leak at about 90000 and when I pulled the "doughnut" off for seal replacement noticed it was
well cracked around the holes (bushed)
Back together again but a vibration commenced shortly after, much as you describe.
I purchased a s/h one (ebay) in as new condition and when I removed the original to replace it found that it had badly collapsed where was previously only cracked.
Immediately cured the vibration, now over 250000 and no further problem.
The large weight at the front I believe is a damper to counter harmonic vibrations in the
suspension.

I agree with Mike.
Why apologise for having a Landie?
The rear rubber donut is not a for for life item and should be replaced about every 80,000km. Some people replace it with a a UJ but requires a bit of work. Can cause vibration when it goes - so does the main ball joint in the rear
suspension yoke.
As said the weight (not lead) on the front axle is a damper - not an issue if it is not there but obviously better if it is.

forum... WHile I am here what is the rear pinion and where do I find it?? Also Ive got 289k on the clock..
Just so I can have a look... It all started after I began towing some 2 tonne loads, however the clutch is fine... I suspected the prop shaft after all the torque the loads would've created...

The pinion is the shaft in the diff that the drive shaft bolts onto.
Towing heavy loads will definitely increase the rate of wear on the rubber donut.
They are about $90 and take about an hour to replace - yours needs to be replaced so get this done and see if the vibration is gone.
