Hi, I am new to the
forum so I appologise if this has been covered, I couldn't find reference to it in another threat..
I have a 1989 fj62 3f 5 speed that is in immaculate condition apart from a blown motor at 180,000km's? And a 1988 fj61 Sahara, Japanese import 12HT auto that is tired in the body but ok Mechanically, 205,000kms.
I want to swap the 12ht into the GXL and keep the 5 speed. Has anyone done this? From what I can see at the moment there is a few problems:
1. The engine mount on the passenger side is located further back, I was told that this can be overcome without welding, but how?
2. Do I need to run the Sahara wiring loom in the GXL? Keep in mind that the Sahara is a 24v. or is is better to convert everthing to 12v.. Costly I would have thought.
3. The Sahara has a neat stainless steel Japanese bullbar with winch, 24v, that has an engage control inside. I looked under the car and a PTO comes off the transfer case and goes back to the winch, can this be retrofitted to the 5 speed? There is a block off plate that is the same pattern as the PTO on the 5 speed box so assume it was available in Japan??
4. Assuming that I need a 2H bell housing to make the 5 speed fit?
If there is anything else I should know I would be most appreciative.
Cheers
Julian

After perusing any info gained here, don't forget to give the members at Lcool a try - there is no dedicated 60's section, but "anything Toyota" is their special subject - there is a wealth of advice there, and just as it is here, its free !

Hi Julian
I put a 12ht into my 70 series 1986 ute. It was already a 5 speed and already a diesel.
I kept all the 12v things from my old motor. Kept the alternator, starter motor and
water temp sender. That is all you need.
The motor went straight in - same mounts fitted perfectly.
Best deal with the 12ht is there is no glow plugs so no wiring there. I had to add a return fuel line from the fuel pump back to the fuel
tank which I T sectioned into the filler air pipe. The 12ht is controlled by vacuum lines so I need a couple of 12v vacuum switches wired in. Other than that it started every time within one turn - no glowing no problems.
Great motor.
