We are heading off with the caravan for a month at Christmas so I am slowly preparing. My DP Chip has seven settings. Factory setting is 4 and this returned quite a bit of additional torque and marginal extra power. Fuel consumption was also down a bit. I have run it on setting 5 for the last 12 months and it makes a big difference to overall performance but fuel consumption is up by about 1 l/100 km. Sorry, it's a 150 Prado D4D. Fuel consumption figures are not all that reliable as there have been other mods.

Anyway, today I tried the setting on 7. Boy! Its like a rocket and no noticeable issues so far. Fuel consumption will be interesting to watch.

Hi Skulldug,
I have the chip on my D4D 120 Prado and have always run it on setting 4. I'd love to hear what other prado drivers achieve regarding fuel consumption on various settings. I tow a caravan which I estimate would be around 2.3T fully loaded.

Cheers

Offroaddags,

I'd like to hear too. On setting 5 (combined cycle) I use 10.7 litres per 100km. Should note, I have a bar, winch, batteries etc and 2" lift which would make a fair difference. Towing (1,300kg pop top) I use around 13 litres per 100km sitting just below 100 kph.

Towing a van with high settings on your chip should be treated with a little caution in sofar as the exhaust gas temps can get to damaging levels.

You wouldn't want to blow a hole in the top of one of your pistons.

Gone Bush,

I certainly am cautious about it and probably won't leave it on the highest setting. When I bought the chip, the dealer told me to call DP Chip for advice on settings. They told me that their chips are programmed for each specific model and that critical temps etc will stay within safe limits even on the highest setting.

It's not DP Chip I don't trust, it's Toyota. I have found their warranty service to be exceptionally poor. Prado 150s suffer from a vibration at 1500 rpm and an intermittent flat spot. Both issues are well documented on Pradopoint. I have been complaining for 12 months and Toyota have consistently denied there is a problem. Last week, I read on PP that there is now a fix for the flat spot so I rang Toyota. They claimed they knew nothing but when I offered to give them the reference number for the update, they suddenly knew all about it.

One of the reasons I paid more for the DP Chip was their warranty. Nonetheless, if I did have an engine or transmission problem, the chip would be coming off before it goes to the dealer. It is about a 5 minute job.

Cheers

I gotta echo Gone Bush's comments on EGT, the more you fuel up a diesel the hotter the EGT. I run a ChipIt on mine but also have the EGT guage to monitor the temp. Would recommend fitting an EGT guage, especially if you tow, as thats when it really starts to get warm. Depending on the state of tune, a Chip typically adds ~30C for normal driving but can be a heap more when the foot is down. At least if you can see the EGT you can back off the throttle.

Cheers

OK I,ll jump in with a question

I have a 3ltr Patrol with a chip and a 3in exhaust if I increase the boost my EGT would increase but would be compensated by the 3in system am I right in my thinking. Skullbug has other mods but didnt say about the increased exhaust.
Thanks

Thanks Skulldug I did increase the boost from 5 as set to 6 and a very short run to Bunnings (Sunday outing) car appeared better towing the van on Tuesday acid test .
But does the exhaust compensate for the added EGT???

New Boy,
Before you start cranking up the boost on a 3 litre grenade (sorry, Patrol) I would do a fair bit of reading on the saga's with the 3 ltr motor.
There's a fair bit on this forum (go to 'search' and type in '3ltr Patrol' or '3ltr Grenade') and a lot more on the Patrol forum as well.

(who wouldn't own a 3Ltr Patrol even if it was given to me)

Disco,

A Disco driver talking about reliability?

That's unique.
