Cape York Trip

Hi All

Planning a trip to the Cape next year around April/May. We have an offroad van 17ft and I want to leave it some where and tent the Northern most part.

Laura has been mentioned as a likely place to leave the van has anyone had any experience doing this recently or can suggest another place?

Thanks

Graeme

Graeme, the caravan park at Lakeland specialises in van storage for people that want to do what you are planning.
But why not take your van all the way. Isn't that what an off road van is for?

Thanks Kevin

Yep you are right thats what they are for. However we have just come back from three months in the Kimberley and frankly we are over corrugations where the living s**t was shaken out the van.

The only damage was the fridge came loose, some big screws fixed that. This time though we will use our tent and not worry about the damage being done to our van. It is not a trackmaster or any of those makes so we will play it safe.

Thanks for your reply

I'm with you on this Graeme.....and like said above Lakeland is a good storage point. Anyhow you can wander more place more efficiently without the van in tow....eg the OTL, down to Varilya, Chili etc etc.

We can endorse the Mt Carbine Caravan Park. They offer free storage while you travel to Cape York with no time limit as long as you stay with them at least one day before and after our trip. The caravan park has excellent facilities which were extremely clean when we stayed in August this year.

x3 for Mt Carbine. The roads could still be a bit damp in April/May so might be easier going without the van.

Hi

If you plan on spending time in Cooktown then Endeavour Falls on the Hopevale road would be great. Easy access to Battlecamp road and being 34 k's out of Cooktown you don't get all the wind.

Good safe storage and large shaded and grassy sites for when you use the van.

Take your van Mate
Corrugations on the Cape Road, are tame.
We found only one section that was a bit rough, on the Bypass road between Heathlands, and Friut Bat Falls.

Drop your tyre pressures down to below 20 and things will smooth out for you
Cheers
Bucky
