We are looking to purchase a trail-a-Mate jockey wheel for our caravan which weighs in at just under 3 ton loaded and is a purpose built of road van.

Do any of the members have any comments on them as we would love to hear your what you think.

Hi Ralph & Anne
We got one this year and it's the best thing we ever bought, because we mostly free camp it makes it very easy to level the van attached. Our van is 3 ton as well, not sure whether it's worth $300 but that's what we paid for it, you might be able to get cheaper on ebay.
Safe travels

I love mine lifts & supports the Kedron very easily.... MUCH easier to use than wind up jockey wheel

Hello Ralph and Anne,
We use one on our 2.8 t van. Easy to use. One word of caution - we use the flat foot plate instead of the wheel. Be careful that the van does not roll slightly when lifting off tow vehicle as the lower leg has been known to bend.
One guy suggested putting the foot plate onto a block of wood with a piece of plate steel screwed onto the block. This allows the two metal surfaces to slide against each other should the van roll an inch or two.
Otherwise worth the money.
Cheers,
Ian

Hi Ian, Just a point of interest, shouldn't the wheels have chocks under them to prevent it from moving at all. Doing anything without chocking the wheels would be dangerous and asking for trouble.

Check out the Trail-a-mate cable system on ebay, so you never have to take it off. ( works great )

There is a new player on the block - see http://www.parts4vans.com.au/ - It's a bit cheaper than the Trail-a-Mate. Have just taken delivery of one. It has a lock/catch on the leg so you can carry it in the jockey wheel clamp and the leg will not creep down.

Get one, you'll never regret it. I have had one for over 5 years & it's used all the time with our van. Best thing I ever invested in, well maybe not the best but still close. Makes things easy and I'm all for that.

i was wondering how you go using this jack with a poly coupling (tregg) which can be a bit fiddly to line up heightwise.
what i would like to know is when you jack it up how much lift per 1 pump of the handle?
if you can understand what i mean
cheers phil

Hi all,

I have had a Hijacker for approx. 6 months and it has never failed and worked a treat......I have also noted that they are currently $235.00 plus postage on their website www.parts4vans.com.au

I would never go back to a crank style jockey wheel as they are too hard on the back and shoulders. My van is a 25ft Sterling and I love the Hijacker because it makes life soooo much easier. I broke 2 standard jockey wheels when we first got the van because they simply cant lift the required weight.

Just my opinion, but all of the larger vans should come with a hydraulic jockey wheel as standard to help us all out??

Have fun.
