Hi Patricia.

This response may be moderated under the off topic rules but here goes anyway.

I searched Mount Cavell on Wikipedia, which of course you may have done also, and came up with an interesting story on Edith Louisa Cavell. Edith was both a british nurse and spy during WW1.

She was captured by the germans and convicted of treason, the punishment deal to her was death by firing squad. The story tells that there was massive worldwide sympathy for Edith and following her death many, many memoriums were created throughout the commonwealth in her honour.

The story is a good read and I'm thinking that the shire of gippsland may have created 'mount cavell' in her honour. Please remember that the patriotism that existed in this country alone was extremely strong with many 'avenue's of honour', statues etc etc honouring the fallen were created following this war.

I could be wrong but I think this may be the answer to your question.

cheers,
Wayne

Hi Patricia, have just returned from Canada and visited the beautiful Mt Edith Cavell glacier. Thought exactly the same thing....saw the story of this amazing lady at the glacier....perhaps therein lies your answer.

Who named it? Post WWI something like the current govt Place Names committee. They would have renamed it actually as happened with Mt Cavell in Canada.
