Hi, I am planning a trip and wondering if three weeks is enough. Departing
Melbourne and going to
Broken Hill,
Tibooburra,
Cameron Corner,
Innamincka,
Birdsville, down
Birdsville track,
Leigh Creek, Gammon Rangers, and home. Thanks.

Hi Julio,
You can certainly cover that distance in 3 weeks and see some of the sights as
well. Or you could spend 3 months doing it and see a lot more. We covered some of your proposed track earlier this year (in reverse direction), so if you have a look at our
blogs you will get some idea of what is out there.
Cheers,
Val.

You will love it. Doing the trip in three weeks is far better than not doing it. People who are retired are lucky to be living in a different time frame and I hope to have the luxury of joining them one day. In the mean time I fit in lightning trips where I can. I always have a good time :-). Mike

Totally agree. We just drove up to the Gulf and back via,
Lightning Ridge,
Tibooburra, Cameron's,
Innamincka,
Birdsville, Mt Isa,
Lawn Hill to
Normanton and back via mainly bitumen but dropped in to Middleton and Lark
Hill.
That took three weeks and a bit. With my hospital stuff the most we can be away is two days less than four weeks.
We have to do a loop
Canberra to the Simpson and back in the same time next year. At least its better than not going.
Go for it and think of it a recce for the real run later when time permits.
Hey John and Val. My time will come (fingers crossed)
Phil

Doable with quality experiences in my view, but on the upper distance limit. Too many km's are a great way to spoil a good bush trip (BTDT). As expected, any books you can swat up on prior will add a lot to the
places you'll see.

Julio
No amount of time is ever enough if you want to see as much as possible. My wife and I spent two months touring Tasmania about seven years ago. It was all sealed road driving and we still did not see everything we intended to see. Had we been driving a 4wd, we could have easily added another couple of months.
I have driven over your intended route and three weeks is enough to do it comfortably without driving like a bat out of hell. You will see a lot and it will be a trip you will not forget. Obviously you won't be able to see everything but if work commitments or whatever restrict you to that amount of time then so be it but don't let that stop you.
If retirement is a long way off, at the rate the
population is increasing, all of those roads may be sealed by then and
Birdsville could be a city.

A relatively short trip like this should be fine in 3 weeks, but it depends more on your expectations than the time limit.
Some people like to turn over every rock, visit every attraction, and travel short distances with long breaks.
Others don't mind a long slog behind the steering wheel, so it boils down to what relaxes you.
Two Chrissie's ago, we took the Ct from
Brisbane to
Perth in 7 days using the GCR, spent a week in
Perth, and came back home over the Nullarbor and through
Broken Hill in 6 days. We could have gone faster and seen less, but we did it in the December heat and decided on taking it easier on the vehicle.
We enjoyed the trip, saw what we wanted to, however we plan to return sometime taking more time.
Your three weeks should be fine assuming you have no mechanical problems or road closures from weather etc.
Go, enjoy, and good luck.
Cheers
Ian

Julio that a very popular route that is often peoples first taste of the outback which many do comfortably in 2 weeks so three will allow plenty of exploring & a couple of rest days.
