Afternoon all,
I will be driving up to Darwin in Jan on a one way trip.

As it will be hot the Missus will meet me there courtesy of QANTAS.

So via Alice or Isa and what are the main attractions for the trip.

I'm thinking about Bourke, Charleville, Boulia, Harts Range and then up the Stuart, though I am open to suggestions.

Cheers

Steve

We lived in Darwin for years and loved it so I hope you will too. Also I hope you like fishing and catching big barra. The season for barra starts after easter and goes till about June for the best catching time. After that it gets too cool for the barra and they are harder to catch.

For your trip - well from Queensland once you leave Mt Isa there is really nothing to see until around Katherine. I hope you have cruise control and lots of coffee.

From Alice - well there is not much to see until you reach around Katherine.

I suppose - Devils Marbles are worth a look and lunch break.Mataranka hot springs just south of Katherine are worth a stop for a day and night. (bit poor if the bats are there in mass but even they are worth see for the first time)

After that most other things you will be able to explore when living in Darwin.

The Stuart hwy is a great long wide easy hwy. Bit unnerving when a road train with 4 trailers passes you.

Just don't fall asleep.

Cheers

Daly Waters Hotel is worth a look / stop at before getting to Katherine, the food is great there also. Lawn Hill isn't to far out of the way coming via Mt. Isa and most certainly is worth stopping at, not sure how it goes for access during the wet season though?

the bats were pretty full on there this year, a great spectacal to watch as they took flight for the night, but they certainly give the whole place a smell of it's own. we stayed right where the springs were, maybe somewhere not so close would be a better option, you do sort of get used to the smell after a few hours being there though.

Steve,

The route through Boulia & Harts Range could be a bit difficult, if there's been any substantial rain, say in Dec or early Jan. That trip involves crossing the Diamantina, Hamilton & Georgina Rivers, as well as a number of large creeks along the Plenty.

Also, after going along the Donohue/Plenty H'ways in August, feel that they would be suffering a bit from a lot of traffic, much of it roadtrains. Check with RACQ closer to the time, you never know your luck.

Bob.
