Hi there, My sister and I will be travelling up the Stuart Hwy from SA in Jan next year. Planning our trip at the moment, and we are needing a stop somewhere in between Alice Springs and Katherine. I have heard the we should avoid Tennant Creek. We aren't camping and so need accommodation but not to fussy. Any suggestions?? Thanks

Hi Sarah

you could try the Threeways roadhouse just north of Tennant Creek, we have stayed in the caravan park which was fine, not to sure about the motel accommodation though it looked not bad from the outside.
They also have a bar and restaurant also. You can look them up on the net, can,t help with anything further north as we have only made it to the threeways so far.
Have a good trip

Dick

Sarah,

We stopped at Three Ways in July '09, and found everything to be pretty good. Accommodation varied, but was clean & tidy, & reasonable cost. Had a meal that night, and it was excellent. Beer wasn't half bad either!!!

Another plus was the accommodation is set back behind the road house, so doesn't suffer greatly from heavy vehicles roaring past, through the night.

Daughter stopped at Daly Waters pub last week, but don't know if they camped or not. Reports on EO say meals are good there.

We did stop at Tennant Ck too, in 09, and while the motel was good, found the town depressing, after knowing what it was like back in the '70's & '80's.

Bob.

Two votes for Daly Waters. One for their ensuited cabins (we booked) and one for their Surf and Turf dinner.

Colourful place typical of quite a few other pubs around the country.

Tennant Creek isn't that bad really, just don't stay at the caravan park on the Northern End of town, the one on the way out to Battery hill is a much better option. i haven't stayed there myself, but a mate stayed there for 2 nights about a 7 weeks ago and said it was not to bad and no trouble to be had when he was there. i myself stayed at 3 ways roadhouse, the trucks come in early and will wake you up if your a light sleeper, we were woken by a roadtrain at 5.30 a.m who left his motor running for nearly an hour whilst he waited for the roadhouse to open then whilst he fueled his truck up.
Daly Waters Hotel is a nice spot to stop at and does great meals, it would be my choice out of the 3 places i've mentioned. http://www.dalywaterspub.com/

Hi Sarah,
Rumpig is right in his statement about Tennant Creek.
I wish I could remember the name of the good caravan Park, can look it up but not tonight. Accommodation guide is in camper. I don't remember if any cabins are there.
I forgot to sign off I'm in a rush.
Take care, safe travels, Bye for now, Ma.

Hi Sarah M1.
Wycliff Well is really good if you don't let yourself get spooked by all the Alien stuff.
Tennant Creek has a beaut caravan park at the back of town but don't know about Motel..
All places mentioned have alcohol related problems particularly after dark.
Don't drive up that Hwy after dark.
I wouldn't entertain Barrow Creek but have only been there during the day.

Daly Waters Pub is a must see, whether you plan to stay overnight or not.
The Menu board is worth seeing & I have the menu tea-towel on my lounge wall, from many ,many years ago.
The people who work there are really tongue in cheek & the traffic lights are terrific. The sense of humur & Lingo has to be seen to be believed or it used to be any way.
Have a great time. Ma.

We have stayed a couple of times at the Outback Caravan Park, Peko Rd, Tennant Creek - once in a camper and earlier this year in the van - quite good on both occasions - the tariff is quite reasonable - there is a pool and a bar with happy hour - they have cabins too - we had not the slightest disturbance from anyone - on each stay we have happily walked down to the main street for a bit of shopping without issue. It's true that the town looks like you'd only want to visit briefly, but there is interest there - the Battery Hill Tourism Centre is really good - lots of mining info, tours and displays (the gold found in TC in the early days was in fabulously rich concentrations). I can't report on accessing any shops, pubs etc. after dark in the main street - we are feet up, watching TV by then :-o). BTW - an aboriginal bloke named Jimmy Hooker has a good campfire yarn and bush tucker show for tourists each night (but probably not in January - summer in TC would be a challenge, even for the locals).

Hi Sarah

We too enjoyed the quiet and roomy Outback Caravan Park in 2009. I don't know the conditions of the cabins though - i hope they would be air conditioned for you. The amenties block when we were there needed a bit of TLC but was servicable. We had no problems with the town and I haven't heard of any problems from others, but weren't out in the town centre after dark.

Am i right in thinking this is just a drive north to your destination without doing any sightseeing along the way?

Of course January won't be the best time of the year for sightseeing. My Blog (most recent in the just loaded at top of page) and my previous ones outline our trip from Alice Springs as far as Katherine. Working on further north which will be here soon (I hope). We did do a few deviations from the highway, but most of the story so far is following the Stuart Highway.

Don't forget an overnight stop in an underground place at Cooper Pedy.

A stop in Katherine at the Big 4 Caravan park cabins is a must to give time to visit Katherine Gorge. And if you have time you may also drop in to the Cycad Gerdone.

Also don't bypass Charlie at Adelaide River. If you do not remember Charlie wasa the Asian Buffalo in Crocodile Dundee. He is preserved at the pub in Adelaide River.

IIn Darwin there is the Orchid Gardens at Howard Springs. A must.

I hope this is what you want.

Phil

Hi Phil; lovely photos especially the orchids. Your photo at Katherine Gorge is taken from much the same spot as the one i chose to put in my most recent My Blog, loaded over the weekend.

Sue was in her element at the Orchid Gardens. I must admit though the range was outstanding. Truly something to see. We have a computer full of orchid photos from there. Well just a slight exageration then.

That cliff in the distance I think is named Jeddas Leap. Apparently it was the one in the movie Jedda that was where Jedda supposedly jump from.

Sue is getting to know her new camera so maybe we can get even better ones.

Hi Phil

Although the film ending was taken at what is now known as Jedda's Leap, those shots never made it to the film due to a plane crash resulting in loss of the film taken. In haste the scene was re-shot in the Blue Mountains. The full story can be read in and via links on the longer version of my blog on my website. In going through my photos i was uncertain of that was Jedda's Leap but surmised it wasn't from the other photos of Jedda's Leap from a different angle. Thanks for the clarification; we took so many photos.

And people wonder why we are so enthralled by the Australian outback.

I hope Sarah and her sister are reading this. They will certainly get an idea on what to expect "up north".

Further to Motherhen's follow-up re the Blue Mountains being used for a re-shoot, of the fatal fall. It was re-shot at Kanangra Walls, a spectacular place not far from Jenolan Caves.

Some bushwalking friends of my late parents found the "bodies"(dummies) sometime later. Sadly, they were both deceased. Sorry, couldn't resist that last bit.

While it was obviously different country, than the rest of the film, the drama of the moment, didn't spoil the movie at all.

What's all this about people telling others to bypass TC, Tennant Creek has a very nice Caravan Park on the North end of town near the Toyota Dealer, I have stayed there a couple of times and never had any problems , and at time of year there'll be plenty of room. Dogs are allowed and Dusty enjoyed his stays too.

Sarah,
I have stayed in motels in Tennant Creek many times, on my own and with my wife and kids. It is my preferred stopover north of Alice. Never had a problem day or night. Don't be worried about Tennant creek, but book ahead for a room.

Nice to hear 'good news' about a town which we certainly enjoyed Ian. Surely, in January bookings wouldn't be needed? Although with Sarah asking now, it sounds like the trip will be planned to precision (if the weather allows that precision).

Hi Sarah,

We have travelled from Adelaide to Darwin scores of times. We have stayed in both caravan parks and several motels in Tennant.

The Eldorado is the place we now use, it has about 80 units. Many of the rooms have been upgraded and are of an excellent standard. We have not experienced any problems there.

Buy the way, when fuelling up at Tennant Creek use the BP just across the road, don't be seduced by cheaper fuel elsewhere.

Enjoy your trip it will be warm at that time of year.

Cheers

IMHOTennant creek has little civic pride.
The public toilets at the North end of town were the filthiest I have seen in Australia. I have seen old/new /battered and pristine but NONE as filthy.
To me this illustrates no civic pride.

I will agree the Outback Caravan Park is excellent.Heading north turn right at Westpac bank into Pekoe Rd..Dont forget fuel will be 15 to20 cents per litre cheaper at Tennant Creek than any of the Roadhouses on the Highway ,
