We are going camping in the Geehi area in the Snowy Mountains this Christmas. Have read that the road between Tom Groggin and Geehi is not suitable for caravans or camper trailers. Can anyone shed some light on this.

Hi Annette,

I have taken a camper trailer on that stretch. It is a bit windy, which is why caravans are not recommended.

What will you be towing?

Tks everyone for the input. It is a 7 foot camper trailer with electric brakes so I don't think we'll have a problem after reading your input.

Tks again

If you mean the Alpine way it will depend on what size caravan you are talking about. We have towed a Jayco Eagle along it with no problems at all. I am waiting to take delivery of a 16" pop up & wouldn't hesitate taking a van of that size either. It's an all bitumen road with a few twists & turns but not all that bad if you take your time........ & really you wont get much speed up anyway.
I had read that vans are not recommended somewhere but the staff at the toll gate didn't even blink an eye when we went through...... Ah yes ! there is a toll !
It's beautiful country & a great trip.

I think you have the wrong road. There is no toll gate and definitely no toll.

Hi Rod,

What Road are you talking about? As far as I know There is only one from Tom Groggin to Geehi & it's called he Alpine Way & is in the Kosciuszko National Park & there is a toll. I have travelled it a few times. It's not so much a toll gate as a Nat Parks office but a pass is required to transit through.

If you are just passing through without stopping, you do not need a pass.

My apologies, didn't know that.... I have paid a toll, looks like I was ripped off........ all we were doing was passing through.

Cheers,

Yes you have to pay to visit the Kosciuszko National Park but there is no toll gate. The Nat Parks office at Khancoban is off the Alpine Way in Scott St.

Make sure you tell the person on the toll gate that your are proceeding directly to Victoria and do not intend to pass go or collect $200.......otherwise they will ask you to pay (just funnin wth the monopoly thing but the first bit is true.)

Hi Annette K

Depending on which way you are traveling to Geehi ,South from Jindabyne you will pass through a toll gate at Bullocks Flat where you are required to pay a park entry if you staying in the National park. From the South you need to call in at the Khancoban office and purchase a pass.
the Alpine Way is steeper with quite a few tight bends south from Thredbo.
A camper trailer would be fine but it would depend on the size of the caravan if you are approaching from the north.
From the south you should be fine.

Its a great piece of country.

Hi Annette,
We towed a 21ft Van over there in January this year with no problems. Same old story, just drive according to the conditions.

Check this site Jindabyne to Khancoban It says "The road between Thredbo and Tom Groggin is not recommended for vehicles towing large caravans." What are 'large' caravans.

Towed our caravan to Geehi and Tom Groggin several times, ignore the sign. The caravan weighs 3300kg loaded.

There are several steep sections you will need to use low gears.

We have travelled in and out both ways from Thredbo and Khancoben.

Just select a low gear before you go over the top of a hill.
