Hi All,
We are off around Australia next year YEH!!! and are beginning to kit out the car and modify the camper. We have a Holden Rodeo LTZ and want to add some gear such as a canopy, bull bar and winch, roof racks, awning, tinnie, electric brakes, etc. but the cost is climbing rapidly. Just wondering if anyone has any info that can help us choose a drawer system. Most
places for a fridge slide and two stackable drawers want up and over $2000. Has anyone had a cabinet maker make one up for them or any other ideas where it may be cheaper to purchase one from?

Thanks for that we are already aware of Drifta, however we are in SA so I will have to check out the freight charge

Second that for Drifta. Luke is a legend, nothing is too hard for him and as we too live in SA (when we're there), freight was reasonable. You won't be disappointed, best set up we've had.

I would save a heap on your drawers by taking the winch off the list. Some will say you cant live without one, but most will admit it is not much more than a heavy expensive ornament. Your choice of course, maybe give it some thought.......oldbaz.

Hi Oldbaz, Yeh we have thought about that but we are doing
Cape York on our own so thought it best to have some gear incase we get stuck and no one is around to help.

Unless you are really getting off the beaten track there are plenty of people around in
Cape York.
And most are busting to use all that recovery gear they brought with them.

Carreen,
Enjoy your adventure it is a great country to explore.
Just be careful that you do not rush out and load up your Rodeo with so much gear that it is very heavy when you leave. You can always get stuff on the way when you find you really need something.
Unless you are planning to be deliberately very adventurous I question if you need a winch. If you drive sensibly to the conditions you will rarely if ever use it. I do not mean you stick to the blacktop but by avoiding bad situations you save stress on yourself and vehicle.
I have always had a winch on my 4wds but if I fitted out another I doubt I would add the winch. They are heavy and I have not used it in years for self recovery. Better tyres, more experience and less bravado get me through.
Don't forget good tyres.
cheers

Thanks Alastair you echo other readers thoughts. I will discuss it with my husband and see what we come up with. We were tossing around the idea of doing without one but thought with going up to the Cape on our own it may be sensible to have one in case.

I would also not worry about the winch with sensible driving and common sense you should not have need for it.
I bet if there was a poll on here about who has used their
winches it will be very minimal.
Just my 2 cents anyway

Carreen,
As already said, the winch is probably little more than expensive ballast! In close to 20 years with a winch holding down the front of our Troopy, it's been used once.... and that was to help someone else. Suggest carry a snatch strap (and know how to use it safely) and travel with another vehicle if you are going into winch-difficult territory, rather than a winch.
Drawers - we made our own out of timber
(see here), no rattles, much cheaper and more space efficient than any of the commercially available ones. Space is very important, so before you commit, consider carefully just what has to fit in your drawers.
Another thought - you won't get it perfectly right the first time, no-one does. Suggest start minimally and let it evolve to meet your needs. Since you are gearing up for the big trip, suggest have at least a few shorter trips first to find out just what you actually need rather than expect you'll need.
Cheers

Thanks
John and Val,
You sure have a set up! I wonder if we can do without a winch and just have a snatch strap and wait at river crossings for other cars at
Cape York if unsure. We are going in April so not sure how many trips we will get in before hand as the camper is still undergoing modifications. However we have used the camper for years so everything has its place, it will only be the car we will need to sort out and thanks for the advice-it can evolve as we go around, I tend to panic and want it all tidied up and set before we go!
Happ travels

I have to support
John. But just to a point.
We have used our winch but mostly to haul others out of their pickles. But I did use it on the telegraph track up at
Cape York to pull ourselves out of a
creek as the bank was too muddy and steep for us to drive out. We could have waited for someone to come along or even retreated and gone for a big drive around on the Development Road. But then we would have missed one of the better tracks in Oz. The Old Telegraph Track. So to us it was worth it. But then again we only paid half price as it was second hand.
Here is a bit of an idea for the back of the car from Outback up in QLD. Purchased and installed by ARB. And I DO NOT work for ARB.

Thanks Phil,
We have been discussing the OTT so interesting to hear you used the winch-maybe we will sit and wait until other cars cross at the same time.

Hi Carreen,
Last year before our trip I built my own storage system for my Rodeo so as to better utilise the space in
the tub and not have everything stacked on top of each other...see link below.
Although not having the same requirements that you need (fridge slide & drawers), it would not be hard to rearrange the setup to suit your needs.
Everything was purchased from Bunnings for approx. $200
Rodeo tub modifications

Thanks
John,
Great set up-I will show my husband as I am the planner, organiser and writer and he is the designer and creator (great team work) Just a query, how did the Rodeo perform offroad? I have only ever had pajero's and prado's so don't know much about Rodeos except we got a great buy and an awsome looking black rig to travel in.

Carreen, I bought my Rodeo brand new in 2005, the only other modifications were the Bullbar, Canopy and Rear step towbar, everything else is stock standard.
It has done the Great Central Rd, GRR, Buchanan Hwy, up to
Cape Leveque...25,000 kms in two trips and ran beautifully, handled the corrugations exceptionally
well, I'm very happy with it!

We did the Cape last year without a winch and never looked like needing one, it's busier than the Bruce Highway during winter so you won't be stuck for too long.
We built a set of drawers in 12mm ply, using heavy duty runners and fittings, spent about $500 for three drawers and room for the fridge, they were the best thing we had on the trip.
Keep the weight down and your vehicle will cope much better.
Regards
Geoff

Thanks Geoff,
I will let my husband know. I suppose keeping the weight down applies to how many clothes, shoes etc. I can pack also :)

why not make your own ? I have a fell-length sleeping platform with 2 full length drawers and storage space under it ... 3 sheets of ply and some woodworking skills will let you make what you want
I agree about the winch .. I have one on my Troopie and have only ever used it once in 6 years .. to drag someone else out of trouble ...

i am not very good at making things.i have a 2007 patrol measured up the back area and the size of the draws went to bunnings spent about 100 on 12 mill sheets of timber got them to cut it size a few screws does the job 80 litre engel sits on top plenty of room for
camping gear in the draws nothing like you would pay 1800 to 2000 thousand for but does the trick
