Hi woozle, I have used the Hema GPS since they first came out. They are a great thing to have besides being able to setup as detailed as 25,000:1 of your favorite areas of travel, real easy to load maps on SD cards.
I find they are great even when travelling on long trips on bitumen where you know where you are going and just have it on to see the names of hills, lakes, stations etc as you drive along. Bit hard with paper to do that and drive safe.
I have a 32GB SD card full just with W.A. maps and other cards loaded with the most detailed maps available for the East coast and Tassie.
The only down side is (in a good way), you go places sometimes you shouldn't of gone so far in the rough scratching the paintwork when on your own and feel like an explorer and wonder if you really should of "just have a drive down here" on that little squiggle on the screen.
I did nearly 5000kms in three months driving around that "little" place called Tassie, criss-crossing along the old logging tracks and trying to get where I was going and not going on bitumen, finding all sorts of places, and you have confidence that you will get back out. Great.
Once you get one you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Shout yourself for Christmas.

Oops - thanks for the alert. I missed publishing one of the main processes that are used in products that have options. I have now uploaded this program and the page works correctly. Sorry about that and please let us know if you want to get one from us. We are currently the cheapest around, "I think" and will match if not...

Woozle,
We have one of the first models. Had to have the battery replaced after two years. Battery and complete software upgrade by HEMA cost $70. Improved clarity of the maps was noticeable immediately. It has been great and I would expect the HN 5 to be at least as good. My only complaint is that it will not give an ETA on any of the 4WD navigational screens. So, when on a big trip, I also use a Magellan Sportrak set up to show the ETA for each day's final destination.

Mine is about two years old and has just come back from Hema in Brisbane for the second time. It was replaced with an identical unit which they say is new. Two new models have been released after mine and I told them if it has to be replaced I would pay the difference for the latest model. No way would they do that , just too hard.
I can't complain about the service though.
My friend who bought his within the same week as I did but lives in Geelong has sent his back as it will not keep way point changes in the memory.
So service is no problem and upon getting it back the upload the latest mapping updates and save all your trips and way points etc.
