Hi all, was wondering what people think of using petrol graded 98 for my
xtrail,(2002) I have duel fuel (LPG) run mostly on LPG...I'm led to believe that by running on 98 (realise there's a price difference) it will give you more k's per 100
my thinking is that pulling a van it might be a better proposition... any thoughts please
Cheers
Stan

Gday
The easiest thing to do would be to try a tankfull. I run my old nissan on 98 when out in the bush, only because i need all the help i can get.

hi sangster
id check with nissan that the motor is capable of withstanding the extra heat from the higher octane petrol
you can burn valves and piston tops from using the wrong petrol in an older motor that may not have been designed to burn 98 octane fuel
after all 2002 is 9yrs ago ??????
cheers barry

The higher the octane the cooler it runs actually.

Unless the X-Trail runs a knock sensor, has a reasonably high compression ratio, and has enough ECU relarn scope in the ignition timing to make use of the 98 octane I wouldn't bother.

High octane does not change the energy content of the fuel,it only stabilises the fuel burn under compression in high compression engines.
If your engine is not knocking, you dont need it.

Even it did give you better fuel economy it would have to be in the range 7-8% to cover the extra price of the 98 ron over the 91 ron.

And if it did give better economy, the oil companies would be advertising that it did to get people to buy it.

I wouldn't bother running your Xtrail on 98..... the benefits will be not noticeable.

We have two cars that have to run on 98 and if 95 is used you notice the difference.

Hi all, Looks to me from all that has been said I'd be better staying with what I'm using unleaded super... and the LPG... thank you all for your input, am very grateful for them, yes the Xtrail is 9yrs old and still running like a dream... pulls the van beautifully, I only drive on the black . Bit long in the tooth now to go off road with all the new gear ones needs, but I wish all the very best to those who are able to do same..
Cheers to all

Yes, we ran 98 because we only did 10,000k per year with the Xtrail and the extra cost wasn't an issue. But if 98 is 14 cpl extra, then not worth the extra money. It also takes a few tanks before any benefit is seen. Both our vehicles are now diesel so we now wonder about Ultimate vs normal diesel :-)

If you believe everything these current affair shows do, they did a test on 91,95,and 98 octane fuel, how it burns and the wether it was worth the extra $$ to fill up, the best out of them all was the 95, equal to the 98 in terms of fuel useage L/per 100.. I never buy 98, infact I nearly always buy 91 as alot of the servos here have reintroduced it as they were having problems getting the E10 due to supply problems and alot of people have gone off buying the E10 as its not economical based on the extra you use compared to the couple of $$ you think you save when buying it. I wont run E10 crap in any of my cars even my wifes which is meant for it, I have done fuel comparisons on her car and still the best is 95 normal unleaded by about 20 over normal 91 unleaded, if I use E10 I lose pretty close to 50 to 60k out of the tank, I am basing this on Litres used per 100 not just a guess each time I fill up and this is only on a baby tank, her cars holds (going by books) 43L so to lose 50k from 1 tank is a huge difference, could imagine how much les klms I would get out of 180L of E10 in my prado,.............

That's very interesting Kimba, thanks for that , losing 50 to 60k out of a tank is a horrible thought I to wouldn't use E10 either.
