Western Cape York

Planning trip from Normanton ,Dunbar, Kowanyama via Rutland Plains, Pormpuraaw Stathleven to Musgrave. There are previous posts on the Mitchell crossing at Dunbar. However lower down the river the track crosses the Mitchell at Mitchell Alice Rivers national park. Does anyone have any knowledge of this crossing and on the possibility and travelling this route.Camping areas and travel times of these tracks would be appreciated. I realise that conditions will be dependent on the wet but I am in the very early stages of possibilities.

Hi Lindsay,
there is a report on the 4wd Action forum by Bushie. He went that way last year. It's a well written report with good photos.
I can't connect to the website at the moment otherwise I'd give you the link.
If you can go to the website sometime, inthe search box type Bushie, Cape York and look around.
If can get onto it later I'll help you.

Regards, eighty matey

Last time I was at Dunbar (18months ago) the crossing there (Drumduff Rd) was well and truly gone and appeared to have been that way for some time with trees growing on the opposite bank in the middle. The crossing downstream is the official one as far as i know. I drove to the crossing from the Pomporaaw side last year and they were building a "super highway" at the time. It would nearly be finished by now I'd expect.

Hi Lindsay,

I had another search and found the Trip Report.
Try http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=129&t=97814&start=30
That should bring you to page 3, where they head to Kowanyama. He has written a really good report with great photos.

Hoo roo,
Steve

Lindsay - When we made this trip in 1989 on the return trip from Cape York we contacted people in the shire office at Kowanyama and we also had a contact in Edward River Mission.

If you go into white pages and under business put in Kowanyama Shire you will get a number of contact phone numbers who will be able to give you up to date information.
