EGT reading at idle

Hi All,

I just fitted an EGT to the trusty Patrol and its sittign at 132 at idle, does that sound in the ballpark??

I know you are joking and here are a couple of out comes from fiddling.

2006 4.2 TD Landcruiser chipped up and on his dyno being tested. Bang 2 broken pistons. Sons old boss. Nearly repaired with big Bucks

1998 4.8 petrol Patrol with a big turbo and injectors. Bang little end let go and rod through the block + the sump destroyed. Life long friend. Will be repaired by next Sunday $4000.

You have absolutely no idea how close to the mark your 'Post Mortem 'remarks were.

Sir Fiddle-a-lot' nearly created a situation in his engine bay similar to that raging around Margaret River last week.

HEY BONZ,
Article in latest Caravan & M/Home mag (copy 165) on EGT'S.
Apparently there is no known answer.
I am led to believe there is no known documented safe EGT, but the higher the engine is tuned the higher the risk of damage. Makes sense.
If u ever find a true reliable answer, publish it.

Sir Bonzforth,

I presume the EGT is aft of the turbo but by how far from the Turbo in your case I'm trying to gauge. My 3L used to sit at about 160-172 at idle but I was pretty damn close to the outlet manifold. 260 to 350 was standard for cruising and over 400 in times of high stress such as towing up hill. Remember to add at least 100C to gauge a more realistic cylinder temperature.

yeah thats about what mine runs at too.

i was telling Bonz earlier, i was running BP diesel and switched over to Caltex Vortex Premium. what a big difference that made especially for towing. i have a digital temp gauge and it was running 2 to 3 deg cooler and the Pyro ran 50 deg cooler as well. even noticed a difference in the power department too.

i will be running the Vortex in mine from now on. cheers.

Its in the dump pipe Mick, about 125mm from the turbo, the Taipan XP had a plug there ready to go.

I can't say whether it would be the same but my V8 79 series landcruiser idles at about 500rpm and the EGT sits at around 80c. The sensor probe is 50mm from the turbo flange as the only place I could place it.

When running without load on the hwy at 100km it sits high 300c but when fully loaded with work gear and towing trailer at 100km it will sit 400 to 450c.

I have heard to try to never go over 500c.

I'm in the market for another EGT gauge. My current one did not last one trip and it's readings were nowhere as precise as yours.

Mine started at 200 and went in readings of 100

Any info on brand etc would be appreciated

Teza, I got this one from Ian at Thermoguard, he is an advertiser here and its a great kits and hes very helpful. This has a digital readout and high and low measurement etc. nice unit

Hi Bonz, that sounds ok, but we need to know if the probe is in the exhaust pipe or in the manifold, as there is about 200 deg difference. If in the manifold it will read 200 deg lower than in the exhaust.
Mine is in the manifold and on a warm day going up a 10% and a long haul I can see 600 no trailer in 5th gear doing $1.10.
I would recommend that you do not exceed 750 if its in the manifold or 950 if in the exhaust. also I wait for mine to get down to around 160 before I turn the motor off.

Bruce, the temp will be higher in the manifold than in the exhaust and also if your temps are in celsius, they are way too high, about right for fahrenheit. Cheers. John

ThermoGuard instrument Your right about it beening higher in the manifold and should have said add 200. My ThermoGuard instrument reads in celsius and here is a link.

If it's any help I have a 120 Prado with 1kz and temp is 130 deg at idle and 370 deg at 110kph with no load.

Sits around 450-500 deg towing my caravan at 100kph on the flats.

Have never had it go over 640 deg when towing the van even up the Toowoomba Range.

I use a VDO pyro and the probe is in the dump pipe.

I have an EGT in the exhaust 100mm from the turbo outlet. I run a TOYOTA 1HZ motor with an after market turbo by the way.

Under normal conditions mine sits on 250 to 300 celcius, but under load , towing a caravan it Sits on 350 in flat country in mild conditions. The temp can go up to 400C in a head wind. When I need to push for a minute or two it can go up to 500C for a very brief period but at 500 I back off. I don't like going over 350 C over a long period of time.

I was told not to go over 500C under any circumstances (by the people who fitted the turbo and the EGT).

It is my solemn duty to to bring to your attention that the originator of this post/thread in asking the question that he did, had not one iota of interest in your turbo setups, EGT gauge, or where you have your thermocouples located.

It was all a ruse to establish if his latest 'Sir Bonzalot-ism' whilst installing the subject EGT gauge and thermocouple had resulted in a fatal outcome to same.

I don't dare mention what really happened for fear of dire retribution, however it would be fair to say that I am still ROFLMAO x 1000 at the mental images that come to mind concerning the said near catastrophe.

Just pure gold for camp fire war stories.
