Waeco camera to LCD screen

I've just upgrade the camera in my horse float to a Waeco Perfectview Cam 27 (RV-27/N). Including upgrading the wiring to suit. I previously used Waeco connectors between the float and the ute, so I re wired them to suit.

I have a generic in-dash LCD screen that has an RCA input for the video.

The old camera only needed four wires; positive and negative 12v and positive and negative video feed. I rewired the ute plug to suit the new camera; positive 12v to power in (connection 5), both negatives to the common negative (connection 7), and the video out on the camera to the old video in on the screen (connection 4).

However, when I plugged it together, I got no signal to the screen.

I plugged in another tow vehicle (that has a Waeco screen) and the image from the camera worked in that. So the float is wired up ok.

Does anyone know how you can hook up a Waeco camera to a non waeco screen?

thanks

Most cameras only have a +ve, -ve, a video out (composite output) and a audio.

If your waeco has positive and negative video wires it is most likely using a differential balanced output and will not work with generic A/V video input.

You could try grounding the neg video and connecting the + video to the screen A/V (video) input and see if it works.

I just had a look at the manual for a waeoc camera, indicates normal PAL output, I would just try connecting the positive video out to the video of the LCD. If that doesn't work try the negative.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I tried a few, but to no avail. Plugged the working vehicle in again just to make sure it all works. Low light ability was magic.

I rang Waeco tech help today.

They state that the Waeco camera will only work with a Waeco monitor as the camera gets it power and such from the monitor. The extra wires appear to provide power etc to enable the low light ability etc. So it's not a matter of using the 12v positive and negative and the video feed.

I'm going to persevere and see if I can get it to work....

In some sites where it is hard to mount a video camera, rather than run
a coax cable plus a cable to power the camera we use a device which
allows the camera to be powered over the coax.

I suspect waeco are doing the same thing, powering the camera over two wires
and using the same wires for the video. The other two wires power the infrared night view leds.

You can buy the power injectors to do this from Jaycar but unless you have some electronics experience you really need to talk to a tv video tech or one of the mobs that install reversing cameras.

All sorted.

Did some extra investigation with the multi meter. Turns out that the Waeco monitor sends a secondary 12v signal to the camera via a green wire.

It took me a while to find it as Waecos monitors have an auto off feature. They'll turn themselves off if they don't receive a video signal after a set time (I think about 60sec). By the time that I turned everything on, and got to the back ov the vehicle with the testing gear, the monitor had turned itself off. I managed to luck it this afternoon and tested the green wire before the monitor turned off.

I ran a secondary 12v to the appropriate pin, pluged in the trailer and lo and behold, it worked!!
