Hi all,
Just found out that number 2 son's beloved Troopy was stolen from outside his place in Coburg at 2AM this morning. He gave chase, but even a diesel troopy can outrun a pushbike.
Details:
Vehicle - 1985 Diesel Toyota Troopcarrier
Colour - White
Rego - (Vic) YBI 142
Add-ons -
Snorkel, Roof Rack, Bullbar w/winch, Grey/Maroon decals
Image Could Not Be Found
If you see/come across any info on this vehicle, can you please contact me or the Police.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris, As a fellow Troopy owner I am really sorry about your son's loss. Let's hope that it is recovered intact.
I am curious as to how the thieves overcame the ignition/steering lock though.

I'll second that, Im sorry to hear this. I know losing our Troopy would be terrible. I hope you are able to get it (him/her) back.
Best wishes,
Val

Iknow how you feel as if I were to lose
mine it would be like loosing my best friend. That is why I have fitted a good alarm system with a good immobiliser.Ithink you should get yours back as there isn't much place to take it in Cobourg unless they want to take it out of Arnhem land.I suspect locals taking it for a joy ride.

Thanks to everyone (both here on EO and elsewhere) for their thoughts and suggestions.
A few minutes ago our son called and said he'd been advised by the police that they'd found his Troopy and he could collect it this afternoon. We still don't know its condition, but it's a huge relief.
As mentioned by a number of people, it really means a lot to him as it's his first 'real' 4WD and he's spent the last year fitting it out the way he wants it to go bush (
Grampians and
Vic High Country mainly).
Boy, are we ever glad the last 24 hours is over!
Not wishing to offend Troopy owners, but why would anyone choose one for a joyride? I figure Santa might come up with a decent immobiliser for him this year.
Rambler - the Coburg in question was a
Melbourne suburb, not the Peninsula in the NT. :-)
Cheers,
Chris

That's great news Chris. This is perhaps a wakeup call for me to do something about the security of my Troopy.
How did the thieves gain access to your son's Troopy? Did they get hold of the keys or circumvent the steering lock?

Hi Alan,
It seems that the lock keyways on both the door and steering lock are sufficiently worn that quite a number of older Toyota keys will fit. He doesn't think anything was broken or overly forced. As he said on the phone last night, it IS a
well used, 25 year old vehicle. :-)
The really good news is that nothing was nicked from the car - all his
camping stuff, tools etc were still there - and it seems to be undamaged. From the fag ends and other stuff left behind (and the fact that all the curtains were drawn), he thinks it was a couple of lads looking for somewhere to shoot up. It seemingly only went from Coburg to Fitzroy / Collingwood.
Family plans are underway for a bit more security to be fitted courtesy of Santa.
Thanks again for your thoughts. He was very heartened by all the support he got, both here and elsewhere (his Facebook page went berserk).
Cheers,
Chris

I leave my Troopie parked in a back yard in Glen Waverley. I disconnected one battery when I parked it - it turns out that the car starts with the other battery that's still connected but the immobilizer no longer works. You've got me worried now. Check out these safety devices- I'm thinking about one myself after reading your story!
