Weipa to Normanton

Does anyone know if there is a route frommWepia to Normanton following the coast of the gulf of carpenteria. Planning a 4WD top end tour next year and looking for the best and most interesting way from Cape York peninsula to the Savannah Way. Hoping not to double back over the same territory twice, but seems there is only one way in and out of the peninsula and requires going all the way back to Port Douglas.

Info much appreciated. Or a link to where I might find some.

Cheers.

No

You have to go back to Mareeba then you could take the Kowanyama Rd and hook a left at "Dunbar" to get back to Maggieville and Normanton.

Or you could go through Georgetown Croydon etc.

What's wrong with turning south west at Artemis, just south of Musgrave Roadhouse? Through "New Dixie" and "Oriners", then on to Dunbar and on to Normanton.

We were thinking about it but ran out of time.

There are a few different options. As said you can turn S.W.at Artenis through New Dixie and on to Dunbar---but be warned the crossing of the Mitchel river near Dunbar can be a nightmare .Abetter way would be to continue on to Fairview(just before Laura) and go south through Palmerville and on to the Development Road then through Dunbar and on to Normanton. There is no problem crossing the Mitchel going this way.

The Mitchell xing is closed whilst they are building a causeway, that's if what they have already done doesn't get washed away out to sea. They were about quarter way in from east bank, so they were doing the hard bit first and that was back in late Sept. this year. By the looks of it they were going to come in from both sides.
You never know, it might be crossable next year after the wet or even during, depending on volumes.
I came through from Artemis and down to Gamboola which has it's own causeway. The Palmer can be a deep xing too.

Another suggestion is - south to Musgrave turn west to Pormpuraaw then south to Kowanyama crossing the Mitchell river at Mitchell-Alice Rivers Nat park and continuing south to Dunbar station on and over the Gilbert river and into either Normanton or Karumba.
Did this in reverse direction in 2006 and had no trouble at all.
A word of warning though is that you will have to contact there Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama communities beforehand as both will require booking if you intend to stay in them.
This road is shown on Hemas Cape York map but on the ground is a bit confusing between Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama as there are so many tracks

That was my next question. Finding a decent map!
How did you find your way through the countless tracks? I suppose they are pretty clued up at musgrave roadhouse and i can ask once I arrive there. Planning the tour in April-May. What time of year did you do it?

Thanks

I have not been through to Normanton or Dundar. I found the roads/tracks mentioned above on the Hema - Cape York map. I only have the digital version that I am viewing with Oziexplorer. That area is also covered by Hema's Top End And Gulf. The area is also covered on the Topo 250 and the Zone 54 maps.

We use the same bundle in the car and use Exploreoz to display them and track our progress.

Daniel
My post re the state of Kowanyama/Pormpuraaw road/tracks was a bit misleading.
We travelled through there in Sept/Oct 2006 coming from the south. The fishing season had just closed at and on arrival in the community we were told we could not stay (cost to stay then $45/car/night from memory ) but on explaining we were travelling through we were given permission to stay at Camp No 1 which is on the bank of the Mitchell river at the crossing into Mitchell-Alice Nat Park. they also warned that the tracks north to Pormpuraaw were very confusing BUT do not worry as ALL roads lead to Pormpuraaw. During wet/early dry season when a track gets too boggy another one is created and all tracks continue to be used thus giving a million different ways to get through. we then stayed at Pormpuraaw ( at the northern beach camp ) which we enjoyed immensely.
From our experience this part of the trip to the Cape was a highlight and I feel that it is a part of thee Cape not usually travelled by many people
Hope this helps but remember my info is outdated and you are travelling in reverse direction

Did the Musgrave to Dundar track for the 4th time Nov/Dec 2011 & what a pleasure it was , About the first half has been upgraded to all weather except for creek xings & low lying areas . They are realigning the rest & it looks like they might get a go at it next year now the Mitchell xing is finished . The xing is still a causeway but is very substantial & would put money on it being around for a very long time . With the new roads Cooktown/ Lakeland N/P/Musgrave it looks like it will be a new part of the Savannah Way , I also did Pompuraaw Kowanyama In Sept 2011 & about the 1st half of that had been upgraded also , although the rest was still quite rough , but it was still 1 of our best drives . Good news. Do you have an photos of the area, particularly the new Mitchell crossing?
Would like to take a look at that just to set my mind at ease. Seems to make sense they would invest in upgrades in this area from the cape to the gulf to promote the savannah way.
Look forward to the adventure in April/May. Will be sure to post any new info as we pass through......

Thanks again to all replies.
