Suspension upgrades

Hi all
Has anyone got a 2011 Colorado Lt-R with an upgrade suspension, I want to upgrade for towing and will be travelling a lot of corrugations, I don't want to use airbags but that’s seems to be all the guys keep telling me, I was hoping someone might have used OME or Bulldog? open to comments and recommendations please

You are wise to steer clear of air bags. Their spring rate is not as linear as that of coils or leaf springs. When they get near their limit of compression they get very hard, so hard in fact that as you are thumping along a bumpy road it's a bit like putting a piece of timber on top of your axle to stop your leaf springs fully compressing.

Why the upgrade of springs? is it to take advantage of better suspension or to carry heavy loads? If it is the latter I suggest that a good WDH system is a better option. This will more than halve the load placed on the rear axle by the ball weight.

Nothing wrong with adapting air bags if they are used 'correctly'.......
That doesn't mean running them at 100psi just because that is their rating.
I run mine at about 40 psi loaded (with a 500kg camper unit) and 10 psi when empty.
Air bags should not replace a good suspension setup- rather complement the setup only.

Hi Michael B

You have not said what you will be towing.
Therefor as you sure you need to upgrade the suspension on the Colorado I would have thought it would take the load, unless you are carrying a heap of gear in the tub or a large van.

someone will know the tech details.

cheers
Ed

Hi Willawa
Towing a camper trailer, but I also carry a lot of weight in the back with the two draw system, and additional fuel tank, it is not just the load, I spoke with a few people at the 4x4 show in Perth and travelling distances on corrugation can cause problems with the shocks carrying weight and towing.

Rather be safe than sorry, thanks for the comments

Mine has had the ironman h.d. set with the adjustable load helper springs for 90 000 k's. I carry constant load of 200 odd k.g., and varying loads over that. I like to be able to adjust the springs that little bit and think it helps.
I'm happy with the performance vs outlay.

Watch out for full 2" lift kits which wind up the torsion bars too much - the ride gets quite firm in the front end.

To those that don't know - all well body colorados come out with comfort springs. Cab chassis models have a longer wheelbase for better weight distribution, and h.d. springs.

hi micheal, we have a 2011 isuzu dual cab with a 2" lift kit and iron man performance suspension. there are three types of suspension comfort, constant, and performance. our van weighted 2800kgs +, had a heap of gear in the car so guessing GCM 5300kgs. we travelled from maude to mungo, pooncarrie, mennindie, milparinka, nocunndra, innaminkca, strez track and the flinders / north and south we do have / use WDH. had NO problems with the system and are now starting to plan the great escape and with the exception of perhaps a mandrill bent exhaust system the car will stay as is. by the way last sunday weighed the outfit. GCM....4900kgs, c,van.....2600kgs, ball weight...260kgs. am i happy with my suspension choice ..yes.
Cheers warren
