Hi all

can anyone tell me what sort of fuel consumption i could expect from a 2008 v8 200 series towing a caravan with an atm of 2759kg? sitting around 85klm per hour.
I have a nissan 3lt at the moment and tow a van with an atm of 2500kg which the nissan is only just legal to tow, i have upgraded the van which will be 2759kg fully loaded so the nissan is to small. So i,m looking at the 200 series v8 petrol any advice for and against would be a big help.

Or would i still be legal to tow the new van with the nissan if i keep the weight down to 2500kg ie not carry more than we really need

hope this makes sense to you

Dick

Dick,
Short answer to the second bit of your post.
No you will be illegal if the plated weight/mass of your caravan is more than the allowable towing mass of your vehicle regardless of how much you leave out of the van.

I cannot answer your first bit about petrol V8 landcruisers other than it will use plenty of fuel.

Disco.

So you get around 14 liters per 100 towing a 21 foot caravan sitting in 90 to 100 Kph...... If I could get that on the highway when not towing I would be rapt.

We get around 16 to 17 on the Highway not towing and towing our Ultimate camper we get 19 to 21 liters per 100.

Olcoolone, is yours petrol or diesel ?? Sounds like your referring to the petrol V8 ??? My uncles (V8 T/D) gets 10/11's L per 100 not towing open road, approx 12/13 round town and when towing his van, not sure on weight but is 23 footer he's around the 15/16L per 100. He sold his old 80 series petrol due to the fuel bill killing his wallet, that was around 21/22 running around town and anything up to 28/30 towing the van. Absoluetly loooves the 200's pulling power and economy, hasn't had any issue with excessive oil consumption either, its the first of them, think it was built 08 but he got it just after xmas so was first registered 09...............

Turbo diesel, we have been talking to our local Toyota about the bad economy.

The Landcruiser has ARB bar, ARB alloy roof rack, Warn M12000 winch, Safari snorkel, Kaymar rear bar, Lovell 3800Kg GVM upgrade with 2 inch lift and Toyota steel rims with Mickey Thompson MTZ tyres...... the back seats have been removed, no aux batteries installed and no fridge.

The Mickey Thompson's added about 1 liter per 100 over the standard 18 inch Dunlop tyres.

The Landcruiser weighs in at 3050Kg as is with 1/4 tank of fuel.

We have tried varying speed from 85Kph to 115Kph in 5th and 6th gear with very little difference in fuel consumption.

Possibly the reason why ?? Maybe with all the extra's. My uncles is as stock as a rock, no bars, lifts, running factory tyres (2nd set now) etc, as it came out the Toyota dealer. Could explain why the difference ?? Cheers Steve

Tricky Dicky

Here is a post copied from the Land cruiser forum ( LCOOL) it seems typical of a few replies in a large thread on petrol consumption.

"I've got a petrol and love it.
I get about 14 to 15 litres/100 around town, 11-12 litres on the open road sitting on about 110.
We are nomads and travel most of the time. We tow a 2.8 to 3 ton van all over aust. Worst figure was 25.7L/100 best was 19.4L/100 average is 21L/100."

I must admit these seem pretty good and not much more than my diesel 200.

Boobook2

Thanks for that those are the numbers i was hoping to hear as i was expecting around 21l/100 while towing.
I looked at a 2007 diesel 200 Sahara which was around $88000 so i thought i can buy a lot of petrol for the price difference.

Hello boobook2 My regular trvelling mate has a 2005 V8 Duel/Fuel Cruiser, He has travelled over 120000 Klm with it to date with know problems at all.
He gets around 22-23 L/100 on Petrol, and 28- 30 L/100 on Lpg, when towing his 3tonne Van, He is happy with that,
At the moment in Melb, Petrol is $1.38 p/ltr, and Lpg is $0.58 p/ltr
That equates to $31.74 P/100k Petrol, and $17.40 P/100k on Gas
He is very happy with that, we did a trip 2 years ago to Alice springs, Kings canyon, Ayres Rock, etc, etc, when away from big towns or cities the price of Lpg can get a lot dearer [ but so can petrol and diesel ] When the gas got up around the 90c to a dollar mark, we did not care if we ran on petrol until we got to our next cheaper Lpg source Hope this info is of some assistance dazren

Hi Dick

If your even partly serious about buying a car to tow heavy loads with the total life cycle cost in mind then check out thread 81503

My decision came down to buying a brand new equivalent to the 200 series petrol for $50,000 new which is rated to tow 3500kg (Patrol GU 4800).

Others here have done similar and not looked back.

G/Day Dick

There are a couple of 2010 4.8 litre patrols in Victoria at the moment.

They are Nissan Executive Vehicles with low ks around 8ks.

I think they came from Dandenong Nissan.

We got rid of our 2008 3ltr Patrol, 22 to 26 litres per 100ks it had 30ks on the clock.

And purchased a 2010 4.8 litre Patrol, all I can say is it's fantastic.

Hi Daza

Thanks for that info I don't think I could talk the wife into going to Vic to look at a car.
I noticed that you traded your 3lt a while ago for a petrol model. What sort of klm do you get per lt towing your van?.
You said you were going through 22/26 litres with the 3lt that seems a lot I was getting around 18lt/100klm. I was always worried about the engine exploding though so was never really happy with it.

Dick,

I had the 3 ltr auto and was right on the limit of 2500 kg's, fully loaded I was getting 17-20 ltrs per 100km.
The mate has the Toyota 200 V8 petrol and can't get less than 25 ltr's per 100 km towing a 2500kg van. Plenty of grunt but the energy has to come from somewhere.

I have recently changed to a 3 ltr man 3200 kg towing rate and what a difference, completly different vehicle. Towing the same van cunsumption is 15 - 17.5 ltrs and a lot more grunt. I have also had advice I can improve grunt and cunsumption by going to a full flow 3" exhaust and further improve this with a chip.I' ll stear away from the chip and just stick with the exhaust.

Goof luck

I don't think there is such a thing as a 200 series petrol they are all v8 diesel. You may do better looking for a late model 100 series turbo diesel.

Yes just put my foot in my mouth. Just had a look around and found that you can indeed get a 200 series petrol, didn't know that!

If trying to tell the difference from behind, a 200 series the V8 petrol will have VVT after it. V8 petrol certainly available as you have said but they are also a tad better on fuel then the older 100 series V8.............

One thing to keep in mind is resale value, the $10-$12,000 you save buying a petrol is lost when you sell..... not forgetting the fuel saved by going diesel.

Tricky Dickie,

As a 200 Petrol owner your open road figure without a van is on average 12 - 13lph, not driving for economy, (You may get better one up & no load). I can't help you with towing figures ! Don't know if you have driven a 200, but after having a Nissan you are in for a pleasent surprise in the noise & refinement category. If deciding on one make sure it has KDSS which is standard on the petrol, but optional on the diesel. The Crawl Control is also a very handy item for the vehicle in tricky situations, as is the Centre Diff which allows for 4 L/H without transmission windup.

Thanks everyone for your replies once again you have all been very helpful.
we have decided to go ahead with the petrol V8 and hope that we average around that 21L /100 mileage towing our van, I usually drive between 85/95klm hour so will see what happens.
The price difference between the petrol and diesel motor models that we looked at was enormous so will buy a lot of petrol.
Also the comfort of the 200 was taken into account, fingers crossed all will go as planned.
I have also spoken to" Clearview mirrors" and they can alter my driving mirrors to suit the 200 series for about a third of the price of a new set.

Dick

PS.
anyone wanting a DP chip to suit a GU Patrol keep an eye on the classifieds there will be one there shortly.
