Hi All. We are planning a trip to the
Kimberley next year and want to try the Dunmarra Top Springs
Victoria River Downs on the Buchanan Highway. Anyone have any recent info on this road? Fuel supplies etc. Also any info on the Top Springs Kalkarindji
Halls Creek road? We will be towing an off road camper trailer. Thanks

I know it's out of date but we drove those roads in June last year and they were in good condition. The only rough part was the first 50ks or so out of
Halls Creek but if you take your time no problems. The rest was a breeze. Can't comment on fuel as we filled up in
Halls Creek and then on the Stuart Hwy, but we know fuel was available at Top Springs, although expensive. It is certainly a trip worth doing over some different country, and most enjoyable.

Road trains use these roads to service the cattle properties in that area so the roads probably tend to stay in quite good condition. Have been from Dunmarra through to VRD and from there through the
Gregory NP. Have also done the gorges east from
Halls Creek - that part was quite corrugated but some great scenery and gorges if there is still access to them.
Cheers,
Val

Did it in 09, and found it a great road.
See no reason why it would deteriorate !
Camped up at
Marella Gorge, ii was nice, but do not try and drive a peg in the ground at
the gorge , it's rocky.
No fuel so fill her right up before you leave.
Cheers

Many thanks to all of you for your responses. I feel much more relaxed about that section now. There does not appear to be any trek notes on these roads. I will certainly travel the Buchanan from Dunmarra to Victoria Highway - around July/august next year. The Buntine may have to wait. Again thanks to all

Sirocco,
This is ancient history I know, but I travelled from Top Springs to Dunmarra in a Holden ute, back in the early '70's, and except for a few corrugations, I thought it was excellent then. With the modern earthmoving equipment available now, doubt if it hasn't improved markedly, or certainly no worse than "back then".
Bob.
