Nudge bar - off the shelf vs. cutom made.

Hello all,
I'm scouring the Internet trying to find a second hand nudge bar for my Pajero io. Not having much luck. Not the most popular of cars and hence the limited availability. Sure they are available brand new for around $500-$600 which to me seems a little steep for a bit of mandrel bent polished pipe.

I'm not after anything elaborate, just a couple of light mounts and HF antenna mount.

My question is, has anyone ever priced up or actually had a nudge bar made rather than buying one off the shelf?

Thanks for any replies (although I'm guessing most of you would have been smart enough to buy a more common vehicle).

Fab.

Perhaps even a CUSTOM made one if you couldn't get a CUTOM made one....whoops.

Hi Nick.
I'm checking ExplorOz, ebay, Gumtree, Trading post, Carsales/parts and just general google searches.

I'm also expanding my search criteria to include Montero io, Pajero Pinin, Shogun Pinin and Pajero TR4 which is what they are known a
s in other countriies too.

Still no luck.

Cheers Nick.
Check your inbox.

One has also been listed on another site in the last few days. Actually for my model.

Am also gathering quotes from ECB, AMA and a few other places including a couple of tube benders.

I have a bull bar on the front but needed a nudge bar for the back of my ute.

After much looking and talking I found a local metal fabricator / welder who was happy to bend and weld a few bits of pipe for me and I now have a custom built rear bumper for $100 including a really nice paint job :-)

The senior apprentice welder had been a graffiti artist before he got the apprenticeship !!!

I had quotes of up to $800 for the job.

I would be checking out the local welding and fabrication workshops, most will not want such a small job, many will be afraid of the vehicle modification laws.

Someone will do it for you :-)

PS I am in Gippsland the welder I used is in Maffra give me a yell if you are in the region !

G'Day Dug.... You've just confirmed what I was thinking. I'm sure a bit of 3" stainless exhaust pipe bent to shape wouldn't cost $500-$600.

At the end of the day, it's only got to be functional enough to hang some lights and an antenna off it. I'm not planning to carve any railway cuttings with it.

In fact, with the airbag issue (see below post) it needs to fold under impact without affecting the vehicle's deceleration rate in an accident situation.

Will scout the local tube benders for someone perpared to take the job on. Not rocket science for someone with a mandrel bender I would have thought.

Worse comes to worse...I might hit you up for the details of your guy.
Thanks....Fab.

The only thing you need to be carful of is if it has any airbags up front (steering wheel, passengers airbag)?? not sure if the same rule applies to nudge bars as bullbars when fitting to vehicles with airbags, going by the model 99, more then likely you dont have one ?? ..............

Hi Kimba,
Yep the car has a driver's airbag. I'm aware of the type of mounts I need to not affect the safe operation of the Airbag.

A lot has to do with the mounting method used, the shear strength of the mounting bolts and the rigidity of the material the bar is manufactured from.

It's in my line of work to know those parameters. Thanks for highlighting this as there may be others considering a custom job over an off the shelf job.

An ECB unit has just popped up on ebay for $450 plus postage (which from NSW to SA wouldn't be cheap). Seems a bit steep as I don't think they are much more than this new.

Think I'll still explore the option of a custom made one.

For the record and for the sake of adding an ending to my saga....

Days after posting this question, I came across a new, still wrapped ECB nudge bar on ebay for $450 landed in Adelaide. The same bar direct from the supplier would have been $630 plus $70 freight.

I bit the bullet and bought it. My idea of buying a more common/used/cheaper one went out the window. They were either to high, too wide or required rebending (possibly weakening them) to get it to fit.

Next purchase will be some Light Force 240 Blitz (can't justify the extra $$$ for the HID's) or perhaps even the 220 Roo-Lites.

The Roo-lites have been covered in another thread on here.

Thanks to all and especially Nick who offered up his nudge bar as an alternative.

Fab.
