Thanks Chris, any info you have would help me. What brand do you have? How long have you had it? Where do you get them? Are they noisy? How expensive ? Like I said I dont have much to go on at the moment. I believe that they require a gel type battery as they charge really fast and ordinary flooded cell acid batteries cant handle this situation. I want to run a few fluoros, a shower pump and maybe a small TV. and be able to recharge a battery every few days. Anyhow any info is good info especially if your moving from total ignorance.
Thanks. CB

They are much better for charging up a battery, I use
mine on my boat when its cloudy for a few days.
If one wants 240V one could always get an inverter for that.

Likewise Klaus, I really only want 12 v power to charge up a battery pack or something. Anything you've got on the subject will help me.I need to know more about these things. Are there many brands on the market. Should I be checking out the boating sites? What type do you have ? Is it to noisy? Come on Klaus bury me in data. Thanks CB

Bluey, the genny I have is a Honda EDX400 (I think), I bought it 5 years ago, not sure if its still on the market. It weighs only about 9kg.
It has a 15 Amp and a 30 amp setting. At 15A its as quiet as a sewing machine, a little louder at 30. I did have trouble with it overheating by running it for hours at the low setting on a hot day in the sun. It does need lots of cooling air, and the air passages are quite restricted inside - modified that since.
A friend just bought the 'Wattagen 400' genny, another DC only machine. I will find out on our Christmas cruise how that one performs. You should find more info with google for that one. None of the better gennies are cheap, BTW. I've seen a what almost looked like a home made genny at a 4WD show, the guy would not start it, bet it was noisy as hell :-)
We are
boaties (sailors) and use the genny on the boat when the solar panel output is low due extended cloud cover. There is no real alternative on the
water on trailer sailors, the outboard puts out too little charging and its too noisy anyway.

Thanks Klaus, that EDX400 honda I cant find on any search engine. The wattagen is so far the only one I have been able to find here in OZ It looks the goods at $495, but it has a db rating of 72, so that could be a problem. Your cruise will confirm the noise level.Merry Xmas. CB

Bluey, I got the letters confused, did you try EXD400? Google gets a few hits but the better ones are in japanese characters!! The EXD350 was the 240V version. I do not think they still make them, have not seen any at shows lately. BTW, it was around $900.- when I bought it, not cheap at all.
72db does not sound too bad,
mine has around 69db if I remember right. Sound measurements are very deceptive, when
mine purrs like a sewing machine at the back of the deck and when I sit in the cabin reading a book its hardly noticable, certainly not annoying. At the higher rev setting it is much more noticeable but you still can talk normally next to it and be understood.
Have a good one
Klaus
