Hi,
Just wandering if any one has used the new hema iPad app, if so what do they think of it.

Has anyone compared it with the VMS iPad app. There is a new version of it as well.

At $180 compared to $10 for a hema US map, they can keep it.

It uses Memory Map as the navigation software. The maps are proprietary, so cannot be used anywhere else. If you have already forked out $$$ for Hema Maps to use on a PC, why should you have pay for the same maps again to use on the Ipad? In my personal opinion, Memory Map isn't all that good either.

Fred,
Memory map is basic but fairly easy to use.
I would prefer Oziexplorer but does not look like that will be here soon.

Agree about maps.

I have some hema maps for Oziexplorer on my PC and I also have a VMS500s which has more hema maps.
Unfortunately I can't transfer those to memory map or I guess the hema app, mind you can not even buy just the hema map app you have to buy all the maps again.

However I have been able to copy my VMS maps to Memory map on the iPad so some saving.

I must admit I like the hema maps as they are easier to read and look good.

I thought I read something that you can buy which will convert the hema maps on pc to memory map but that was $50.

I am not in the market to buy these just wandering how they perform.. The new Hema app has got some good reviews in the apple store . The VMS app has some mixed reviews but generally ok.
It would be good to see or hear of a comparison.

As you say why should we pay for them multiple times, even $50 for a conversion if that is what is , is a bit much.

A bit wrong above, the hema maps on my VMS navigator are copied from PC. I use them under Oziexplorer on the VMS device.

Some more info

The cost of the iPad Hema App is $179. This is what I can guess is just memory map with a lot of hema maps

The cost of. Hema Australia 4WD Raster Map Collection Maps on DVD is also $179
These maps run on Ozi

I wander if the maps provided with the iPad app are the same maps. Most will be I am sure.

You can get memory map app on the iPad for nothing.

Could be they just converted them and are now selling them again.

Have a look at Bitmap - loads files in ozi format for use on IPAD.

I've not used it on a trip but in testing around town it looks OK.

Bitmap is ok but there are problems with it.

When I try to go to my current location it is out by a number of kilometers

I have reported the problem and was told by there support is that bitmap does not support the map files which Ozi uses.

MAPs is a bit of a beta and there are known problems.

What you have to do is manually calibrate your maps in bitmap. I have not tried this yet but reckon it would be time consuming.

It did work better before the ipad iOS 5 upgrade, but then again so did a lot of things.

I have been using Bitmap for 18 months & the GPS is spot on. The latest upgrade did not affect mine & it still works fine. I mainly use the Aussie raster maps which are ecw files but can be converted for use in Bitmap. No calibration is needed just to convert the format. Willy

It worked OK on mine until the IOS 5 upgrade.
I contacted the support about it and he said the Ozi .map files re not fully supported but may work.

He was the one who mentioned the manual calibration.

If you have an ipad and don't already have the maps then I reckon it would be a good option.
I'm keen to know how it works "in the real world". I've tried memory map on the ipad with some hema maps converted from ozi and it worked pretty well. If I was going to upgrade to more recent maps I reckon this would be the way to go.

Memory Map is free, it's the maps you pay for.

Bitmap app currently has a number of problems since ISO5 and the bitmap update came out. I can't even reinstall my ofx3 maps since then; it just won't accept them. I had to reinstall the app twice and delete all maps twice, just to get the app working.

I have been to the twonav site to try and get that downloaded onto PC and their website has major failures at this time. So I'm not paying $70 for an app when I can't alter my maps to suit twonav.

Fred,
There has been two new versions of bitmap.
After installing latest I had to delete and reload maps again.

There is still another issue as mentioned above.

I don't believe it is goer as a ongoing product.

As mentioned above I have some memory map maps extracted from VMS gps so it is an ok option.

It is easier to use than Oziexplorer but has no where the same features, ie on iPad version.

The Twonav pc software is called Compegps land 7 and can be downloaded from
http://en.compegps.com/products/software/land/
Working fine for me to download.

Trial version available although you do have to register it but not hard to do.

They seem to do a trial android version of Twonav but not for Ipad. Only paid version which I'm happy with.

But don't forgot folks, go and buy you itunes cards when on sale. I believe Harvey Norman have 2 x $20 cards for $30. Makes whatever you do buy on itunes 25% off. Big W recently had same offer and may still have it.

Rich,

The app is called Memory Map and it is free. You need it to run Hema Maps which you can buy online. They are broken down into four regions so you don't buy the maps you don't need. I find Hema the best. I have Garmin Aus Topo which is expensive and lacks detail. I haven't tried VMS.

I note some anti-apple sentiment but my experience has been all positive. I would never go back to "you have just suffered a fatal error". Apple just works.

Cheers

Skull,
On the 22/11 this year hema released their own app for iPad and iPhone, check the app store
However what I think it is memory map as the app and a set of hema maps included.

Alternatively you can just get free memory map as you say, and I have, and buy compatible memory map maps. I think that is what you are referring to. I am referring to the new offering, all to bloody confusing

Like you I reckon the hema maps are good. You can then relate to your paper maps more easily.

Thanks for the reply,
Rich

Re Bitmap on iPad - since the ios5 update & the latest Bitmap update - Bitmap has continued to work fine for me. I did not have to reload maps etc & the GPS reading is very accurate. Willy

Gidday

I have been following this thread (and a few similar ones) because it is the time if the year to treat myself and computer mapping was on the shortllist.

But decisions decisions: Ozi or Trackranger, laptop or tablet and if I go tablet, Apple or Android.

My phone is old school and used for phone calls which it does well so I am not interested in replacing it with a GPS/music player/video camera that can sometimes be used to make phone calls.

And then there is the amount of use. It could end of costing a lot for a couple of weeks a couple of times a year.

So after reading some of the pitfalls outlined above and taking into account that I don't really want to be technologically challenged too much, I reckon I might stick with paper for a while longer. It has served me well up to now. You don't need a computer to travel the Gunbarrel Highway or the Canning Stock Route, just a good map.

That's not a comment on anyone who chooses to go this way, I just don't think it is for me at this stage.

Cheers

Rocco

Hey Everybody,

I thought now seemed like an appropriate time to throw our 2 cents into the mix before everyone goes running off with ideas all over the place.

The HEMA Australia 4WD app is based off the Memory map app, however where they differ greatly is the amount of data that is supplied as standard. The HEMA app comes preloaded with over 70 HEMA maps that cover every part in Aus in one form or another hence the initial 1.5GB download.

Due to the Memory map connection it does mean that if you have the HEMA Memory Map Raster DVD then you are able to load the mapping into the Memory Map free app or the HEMA USA road Atlas app as well. However if you don’t already have the Memory Map DVD then it does work out better priced to simply purchase the HEMA Australia 4WD app. With the HEMA app you still have the opportunity to invest in any of the other Memory map products through the digital map shop.

In regards to people with the HEMA 4WD Raster DVDs, due to the different formats they are not able to be copied into a Memory Map based product, including the Australia 4WD app. However as the disk is in Ozi format it is possible to load this disk into the Ozi Android app.

The maps that are supplied on the DVDs are slightly different to the ones in the App itself. The biggest difference is rather than having an individual map that has been designed by HEMA for all of Australia, the DVD has the standard 7 part Geoscience map for Australia. There will also be a number of small changes to some of the maps, most of which won’t be overly noticeable. The reason for this is that the disks and their content are from our map range in late 2010 and the maps on the Australia 4WD app are more recent.
I hope that answers all the questions but if you have any more feel free to post them up and I will answer them to the best of my ability for you.

Regards

Many thanks for that.

I like the HEMA maps and have been trailing some on my IPAD as I have Memory Map installed.

A couple a questions and one unfair one which you may choose to not answer.

Is it possible to use the IPAD versions of the map on a PC version of Memory Map, not sure how to transfer back the other way but had to ask.

I guess you can still transfer tracks routes and maps from the PC like you can with memory map now.

The unfair question is how does this compare with the VMS offering, what is different is what I am asking. Totally understand if you do not answer that one,

Richard
