I am looking to buy a vehicle for a trip around australia. Dad will buy it off me when I return so we need to purchase a car suiting both of us. Dad works four hours away and does the trip on country roads each week. His requirements are plenty of head room (he is very tall), AND must have dual air bags. I don't want to spend more than $20,000, and have found that dual air bags and quite rare in anything older then two years. Dad is also thinking that buying a 4X2 (rodeo or courier) will be ample to tow a pop-up and get us where we want to go... i was thinking definitely a 4WD. Does anyone have any comments about pros and cons or advice on steering us to a comprimise?

The only 4WD that fits your requirements regarding air bags is probably a 95-97 Discovery. Whether that fits the bill is another matter entirely.
I may be wrong but they are probably the only ones in your price range with bags.Fidei defensor

Ok, thanks, if we were to ignore the airbag requirement, what would you recommend for driving with a pop up caravan, mostly on road around australia. So as economical as possible on fuel, plenty of head room, and will be used only on-road after our trip as a travelling to work, holiday car...
please excuse my vagueness... i am new at this.

If ecconomy is a priority and noting your travel will be mostly on road I would suggest you forgo a 4WD. Use more fuel and more expensive.
What about an ordinary
sedan .. Holden, Ford etc ???
Or perhaps a diesel 2WD Hilux or similar. Not sure about tallies in these though.Fidei defensor

You will find that the 98 Jackaroo SE has dual airbags.
You can get a good one for under 20K if you look around a bit, and they are quite a tough machine.
They are also good for tall people [front and rear]
Nelli, as for you latest post about a general vehicle to pull a pop top van.
It depends very much on the size of the van, but the AuII and III series Falcon would make an ideal towing platform for general use.
Plenty of power and reasonably economical.
They are under 20K and most versions have dual airbags.
Worth a thought
