Hi guys,

I need some advice on the pros and cons of mounting my second spare tyre on my troopy.

I have one spare which is mounted to the back door.

I have the double mount bracket on the Kaymar back bar but i have been told its expensive for the double wheel brackets?

So if i dont get that i want to know where to put the second spare?

Bonnet?

Top rack?

What do you think?

Any advice is always appreciated.

Cheers,
Gaz

Why carry a full second spare? Just carry a spare case and have the tools to change it and method to pump it up if required. Much lighter and easier to carry. Cheers. John

I second John's suggestion with the proviso of the type of country you are going to be travelling in. If it is rough and rocky with a high likelihood of puncture then maybe a full spare is worthwhile, otherwise the casing will meet needs just requires extra time.

Tyre technology has improved greatly over the years and punctures are fewer in my experience provided you drive to conditions and use sensible pressures. I always used to carry 2 full spares but now go the way of second casing only.

Hi Gaz,
On the bonnet? It may restrict your vision and possibly get you booked.
On the roof rack? That's where mine is but is difficult to load and increases the top-heaviness. I use a simple pulley block arrangement.
I would suggest carrying only a spare casing and putting it on the roof rack.
An appropriate tyre repair kit may also be desireable together with the knowledge to use it.

Cheers

I do the same. I carry a tyre without a rim on the roof rack as the second. I also carry 5 tubes which take up no room at all to get me out of trouble if required. Also carry the usual tyre repair kit.

Yep, carry a 6th rim is an overkill.

I read somewhere that a guy carried the case only but put an inflated tube in it to keep out dust etc.

Not sure if any merit in that or how successful it would be.

Some troopies have a spare under the rear seat, near the back door on the LH side.
Its probably only good if you are using the standard split rim and the tyre that comes with it
